been with his gf since jr. high (15 yrs), she's a sweetheart and they're great together
i give him major props for his delay tactics... shit, i caught grief from everyone waiting 8 years with mrs. shakin
anyway they get engaged, and he's like "we're doing it on labor day weekend. in new hampshire" (where they live). no shotgun involved, they're just like 'fuggit, we don't want to plan some long island princess wedding for 2 years where we hate each other by the time the wedding comes.' i'm so proud.
picked a beautiful small resort on a lake with mountains in the background. got a big lodge/house outside the regular resort rooms for me and mrs. shakin. keeping the guest list small, which will automatically be smaller with it being on 3 months notice, on labor day weekend, up in friggin new hampshire.
his gf's dad is footing the bill for everything, and is happy to do it; his other two daughtnes insisted on long island princess weddings that bent him over hugely, he's gonna be in and out on this one for like 20k
sopne picked shakin jr II to be his best man, with both of them making the caveat that i make the speech/toast, because shakin jr II would rather have bleach poured in his eyes than speak in front of a mix of strangers and dooshbarg relatives
anyways, i'll be wearing a suit and sitting roughly 10 ft from the dais

Wife and I still aren't married after 2 kids and roughly 18 years. We always said meh, we'll do it later just for the celebration. Still haven't done it. The more we go forward, the more the gap increases between what we would want (litterally go sign paper and not GAF) and friends/family who want a big event.
