Thanks for the look bud. My old man is a gun guy. He's trying to talk me out of a shotgun for home defense. Too cumbersome, takes too long to load, where can I keep it away from the kids, etc. To me, if I was breaking into someone's house, the sound of a racked shotgun would make me shit my pants. Old man is pushing some 3" Glocks, if anything. Quick to load, fingerprint case, point and shoot. He (and I) have access to the local police department range, so I can use it whenever I want at no cost, just have to bring my own ammo. But they don't allow shotguns. I will buy something, probably a handgun, in the next month or so. Then I'll have to parse through this thread for the best ammo deals and stock up.

To save you the parsing amoseek.com is an ammo deal search engine and will find you the best prices. Just make sure you factor shipping in.

If you're going to go the pistol route I'm not sure why he's recommending a short barrel pistol. For home defense you want the longest barrel you can get because it will be more accurate, will have less recoil, and will hold more rounds. Short barreled pistols are for conceal carry. If you're going the Glock route look at the G34 assuming you're going with 9mm. It has a lighter trigger, longer barrel, and is much more accurate than any of the compacts or subcompacts. If you plan on storing your gun unloaded you might as well just get a hammer. I'll never understand people that keep a gun for self defense that is unloaded or someone that carries a pistol without one in the chamber. It makes zero sense.

glock 19x is a good handgun to have around the house
i prefer my 43x which is a bit smaller but the bigger the handgun (generally speaking) the easier to hit what you're looking to hit, especially if you're squeezing off more than one cap

My shotgun is the only gun I do not keep "hot" for these very reason. That sound is international for Get The Fuck Out.
