I was drinking 2 or 3 bottles of vodka a week. Quit over the summer for a month and lost 20 lbs, was feeling good. Started back up with the idea I'd occasionally have a drink, on the weekends, bla bla. Pretty quickly was back up to the same level as before. I'd drink a third of a bottle a night. Off the sauce again because that shit can't be healthy! I find it helpful to stay busy. Focus on health and diet. I signed up for two nights of indoor tennis league so I don't get bored at night and want to drink. That and going to the gym with sophne should keep me busy enough. Im going Dry January. To your point, I was gifted a case of scotch in early November, got 2 bottles left. Then there’s the beer, wine etc . If you ask yourself if you drink too much, you do. Im gonna be completely dry, consume nothing but water after 6pm Sun to Thursday and eliminate ALL sugars during January . Yesterday, I was trembling from withdrawals, today a little bit as well. Are you completely off? Yes, completely off. Hopefully for good this time. I’ve gained 20 pounds back since August so I will be working on getting that back down getting my 10,000 steps, working out three times a week and playing tennis shouldn’t take that long! These damn jets will drive you to drink though!

Why dry January? Do you have issues with alcohol consumption? I don’t get it. Yes. Been to many AA meetings. Hasn't stuck, but I've curtailed it significantly. Gone from sneakily cracking beers (high ABV IPA's) at 8am to not starting until 6pm. It's been a battle. Came clean to wifne back in June and she's completely supportive. Real roller coaster, but managing. Just gotta keep the right mindset. My uncle was a COMPLETE mess.Lost his kids, wife etc…. At age 40 or so went on AA. Changed him completely. AT my daughters wedding, next day I saw him in hotel at 7am dressed well. He went to an AA meeting in Charlotte, he lives in California. Alcohol can be the devil.

I cant lose more than 10 lbs without looking like a skinny freak…… This thread was eye opening. I broke the rules and shared some of the posts with my GF who drinks as much as I do.

Let them know you're an atheist and they'll 1) Convert you and then 2) Get you to stop drinking, in that order.

Some crazy shit happened to me while I was out drinking somewhat recently that could've ruined my life (unfortunately no exaggeration) Decided to try and make the best of it and use it as a wake up call. Haven't had a drink in over 3 months now Oh you can't drop that and leave. Common, you know we don't judge. We'll mock you, but no judging.

CRAZY STORY ABOUT Alcoholics Ananymous and Alcoholism
One day a client came in my office and told me a very interesting story. His his family moved from Binghamton New York to Charlotte about 35-40 years ago. One day his sister told him that her son was contacted online by somebody who said that 23 and me confirmed that they were brothers. Son was stunned. Turns out that 40 years ago while she was at a Catholic College in New York she had a baby and put that baby up for adoption. No one knew except her parents and my client. All younger siblings were not told. The family kept it a secret. Her son was shocked, told his mom and she had to call “The family meeting”. Turns out he was adopted by a family in Binghamton, who got transferred to Charlotte the same years that my client family did.
The family arranged to have the child meet them. It turns out he also lives in Charlotte, a strange coincidence. When they arranged to meet this child, (now 38 or so) he walked in and it turns out he's my client's friend. They met in AA. For 10 years he was golfing with his nephew, who he met through AA. Begs the question, is alcoholism a disease or a behavior. My client and 2 of his 4 brothers are in AA.

I don't know if it's a disease or behavioral. Maybe some are genetically pre-disposed to it like male pattern baldness (like me). I can stop and start on a dime, so I'd lean towards behavioral, especially since there are no alcoholics genetically related to me. My wife's cousin, however, had a ridiculous problem and has been sober for 7+ years.

it's physiological in some. it's psychological/behavioral in others. and it's a blend of the two in the rest.
everyone starts out drinking socially. many can keep it to drinking socially, some slide down the path of having beer/booze on hand to "pre game" social occasions... which ultimately leads to drinking alone on weeknights out of boredom... which for some leads to dependence (addiction?)

Well, it's been a wonderful meeting, full of great shares, but we have to end. The Giants fans/meth-heads have this room next.
Time for one more share
or more
Hey don't open that door! I haven't hidden my wallet yet

This is me, my exact progression. Luckily for me its purely a psychological dependence. Don't have any physical withdrawal symptoms so it's just a matter of changing my habits. Not gonna say I'll never drink again but my goal this time is to be off for the remainder of the winter and then be more responsible about it in the summer. strictly limit myself to social drinking or the occasional tall beer at the Mexican place. But getting hammered most nights is no longer viable for me.
