instead of assuming what was going on in people's heads...
if it was me, a concealed, holstered gun in NY means LEO. Nutjobs are usually carrying it outright or hiding it somehow. If the guy looked crazy or was acting suspiciously, I'd call 911 and keep the guy in view.

Todays Responsible Gun Owner's News.
Police: 3-year-old shoots father, pregnant woman By Gabrielle Burkhart
ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Albuquerque Police said a 3-year-old boy got a hold of a gun, and shot his dad and a pregnant woman. It happened inside a motel room in northeast Albuquerque.
The shooting happened inside a room on the second floor of the America’s Best Value Inn, off Menaul Boulevard around 2 p.m. Saturday. Police said a woman had a loaded gun inside her purse, and a toddler got a hold of it.
KRQE News 13 was on scene as a man was hauled off in an ambulance. Albuquerque Police said a father was shot in his lower back by his 3-year-old son.
“That’s scary, you need to keep your guns put up and you need to have locks on them,” said Robb Robillard, who was in a motel room on the bottom floor when the shooting happened.
An APD spokesman said the toddler got his hands on a loaded gun from inside a woman’s purse.
“It’s a very tricky situation when you’re dealing with children, so that’s why we need to talk to the adults and find out what happened,” explained officer Simon Drobik, of the Albuquerque Police Department.
Drobik said the toddler fired a shot, hitting his dad. Investigators said the bullet went through the man’s hip, hitting a pregnant woman in the room. She was hit in her shoulder.
“I was the first on scene, put a tourniquet on her arm, and they rushed her off to the hospital,” said Drobik.
Police said a 2-year-old girl was also in the room. The children were not injured.
“I came out of the room and saw police officers downstairs and I came down the stairs and saw a whole bunch of cop cars,” Robillard recalled.
Robillard was surprised to hear the shooter was a 3-year-old. He said parents should be more careful with guns.
“I think everybody should have the right to own them, but you need a lock them too, especially when kids are around,” he said.
Police said the parents will be all right.
Animal Control arrived on scene and took two pit bulls out of the motel room. Investigators searched the motel room for hours, trying to piece together what happened.
Police said it’s a scary situation that could have been deadly. APD wants to remind people that carry guns, to keep them locked up and away from children.
Drobik said police recovered the gun inside the motel room. The father was released from the hospital Saturday, while the woman is still at the hospital being monitored. Police said she is eight months pregnant.
The Children Youth and Families Department has custody of the two children on a 48-hour-hold. Police said the parents could face felony criminal negligence charges for having a loaded gun near kids. The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office.

Albuquerque Police said a 3-year-old boy got a hold of a gun, and shot his dad and a pregnant woman. =============================================================== Glad no one was killed or seriously injured. Shot his Dad and a pregnant women. Both of whom I"m going to say deserved it, with one shot, that's good shooting. What kind of gun laws can we come up with to prevent 3 year olds from shooting there idiot fathers and slutty girlfriends, that don't infringe on the righteous? Other then ban guns, and forks?

Other than mandatory safety classes, Im not sure there is. But I think this relatively new fear that we need to be packing every time we go to Piggly Wiggly with the kids sucks.

Even mandatory safety classes wont always prevent the above. We all take state mandated drivers education, yet how many shitty drivers are there out there that dont use common sense and dont follow what they learned.
Its not a bad start, but you need stiff penalties for adults who leave their guns unattended or within reach of children as well.
I saw a meme on Facebook that more toddlers were killed by guns this year than terrorists in the US, or some such tripe. Well, more kids were probably killed by ingesting household cleaners as well, or by running into the street unattended by their parents. At some point, you can't fix stupid. But when stupid leads to someone dying, you CAN throw the book at them.

I'm all about training and practice, the more the better. I just don't believe it should be mandatory to own a gun. And does anyone think we need to train folks that they need to keep guns oR ANY OTHER POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS items out of the reach of children? Hot stove training? Sharp object training?
I am in favor of gun training and swimming lessons in our schools at a very early age, jsut not mandatory training.
There are plenty of laws that deal with punishing idiots

If convicted, that would then prevent them from future gun ownership? Sounds fair if so.

But when stupid leads to someone dying, you CAN throw the book at them. Not very useful when that stupidity leads to somebody dying who had no hand in the stupid decisions. If the gun had fired into the wall and killed somebody in the next room then the criminal punishment the parents might face doesn't do much for the person who was killed.

Has anyone stated mandatory training will be the cure all for all gun owners? If it stops the people who do not think gun ownership is a serious responsibility it would not help society?

If the gun had fired into the wall and killed somebody in the next room then the criminal punishment the parents might face doesn't do much for the person who was killed. So whats your rational solution? Unless you completely magically make all handguns disappear and ban future sales, there will always be some odd percentage of the population that will pass any criminal or mental health background check, and will simply be irresponsible. You have a few drinks, get in a car, and kill someone. Society punishes you. Doesn't do much for the person who was killed. You can make the same argument for a million other scenarios. But maybe, just maybe, harsher penalties deter the next person from leaving a gun attended. And maybe training will help with irresponsibility, although with so many training courses, folks do the bare minimum to pass and then don't apply what they learned.

Has anyone stated mandatory training will be the cure all for all gun owners? If it stops the people who do not think gun ownership is a serious responsibility it would not help society? One would like to think people wouldn't need training to learn to not leave a gun loaded, unattended, in reach of a child. But no, no one has said mandatory training is a cure all. And yes, some form of training probably will deter some small percentage of casual gun buyer, who may be irresponsible from buying a gun, but the devils in the details. How long is this training? a few hours on a Saturday morning? multiple sessions? every Saturday for six months? Is it classroom / lab / both? I.e. actually firing a gun or just lecture? People sit though safety courses for a few hours to reduce the number of points on their license and to save a few bucks on insurance. Those same people then go out and drive slow in the fast lane, or don't heed the rules for a four way stop, so how effective it is, I dunno. Id posit that most folks who want to buy a gun would sit through the same.

As a public service I'll post below the core rules of firearm safety. There are more safety rules such as always clearing or checking to see if a gun is loaded whenever you pick up a gun or before you hand it to some one else, always use a proper fitting holster, Always wear eyes and ears, etc., etc.. But the core rules are those posted above, which I learned in Freshman Hunters Safety Class in school a long time ago. I'm glad someone posted this. Thanks.
