February 2: The waiver system started on this day and teams can now officially start releasing players. For the Jets, that means they'll be looking at players who potentially could be seen as expendable budget cuts. If a team is trying to restructure a deal with a player, but can't come to an agreement, they have the opportunity to cut ties.
February 16: Teams can officially start using the franchise or transition tags on players and this runs until March 2. The immediate name that comes to mind is Detroit's Ndamukong Suh, who is set to become a free agent. If the Lions were to use the franchise tag on Suh, it would cost them north of $26 million, but they also could sign him to a lucrative contract as perhaps the highest-paid defensive player in the league.
February 17-23: The first real event of the 2015 offseason takes place at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. It's becoming a bigger event each year. This is a place for teams to obviously get a glance and a feel at the upcoming draft class and get a start on their draft board, but it's turned into so much more. Now executives, coaches and agents are there to start the informal free agency talks and other business.
March 7-10: This is the date were the league allows teams to talk with the agents of unrestricted free agents and start getting into contract negotiations. Deals can't officially be done until March 10, but a good chunk of deals will get done during this window of time.
March 10: The first day of the new 2015 league year is finally here. This day is the NFL equivalent to National Signing Day. Before 3 p.m. CT, teams have to exercise 2015 options, submit qualifying offers to restricted free agents and extend minimum salary tenders to free agents who have accumulated fewer than three seasons of free agency credit. All teams also have to be under the cap by 3 p.m. CT, when free agency officially begins. Teams also can start to make trades again.
March 22: The first-ever Veteran Combine will take place in Arizona. The NFL is allowing 100 veterans who are selected by the league to go through similar drills to the scouting combine in an attempt to get back into the league.
March 22-25: The annual owners meetings in Phoenix start up. This is also just one reason why the veteran combine is taking place in the same place and during the same time. Owners get together to vote on proposed rule changes and teams are awarded compensatory picks.
April 20: Teams who have returning head coaches can begin their offseason workout programs.
April 24: Restricted free agents need to sign their offer sheets by this day.
April 30-May 2: The NFL Draft starts up. It's moved back into the start of April, but for the first time it won't be taking place at Radio City Music Hall. Instead, the 2015 NFL Draft is in Chicago.
May 3: Teams must exercise their fifth-year options for 2012 first-round draft picks.
May 8-11: Teams can start their three-day rookie minicamp on this weekend. Or they can wait for the following weekend to do so as well.
May 18-20: The NFL's spring meetings take place in San Francisco.
Mid-June: Dates aren't set yet, but for all NFL teams this will be the time to hold their mandatory three-day minicamp before players have time off before returning.
Late-July: The start of training camp starts and the fever for football begins to steadily rise. Dates aren't set yet, but it's the first chance to fans to get a glimpse of their 2015 team.
