So can someone more knowledgeable than me run through some of the scenarios if Mariotta is there at 6 and we don't want him and there are trade options on the table.
So, what I want to know is a. who are possible trade-back partners (the Eagles are the most obvious, I think the Rams are also a possibility?)
b. What happens if we, say for example, trade back with the Eagles - what picks could we possibly get off them and who do we target with those picks?
So lets say for example we get the Eagles 1st and 2nd this year, what players are in the frame for those selections?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

In addition to the Eagles, I would think that the Browns are a possibility as a trading partner for the 6th pick. Cleveland holds the 12th and 19th and may be looking for a WR to replace Gordon. The Bears at 7 are now in the market for a WR. Assuming the Raiders go Cooper or White at 4, 6 might be the ideal spot for the Browns if they want to get ahead of the Bears (picking 7) to take whichever of those 2 is still on the board.
If we can get the Browns 12th pick - we probably can still get an elite pass rusher -- Beasley or Ray could still be there. They are likely both gone by the Eagles 20th pick. I would think Trae Waynes or an OL (Fisher, Peat, Scherff, Collins among others) might also be in the discussion if we trade back.

Just for kicks, I decided to run the two trade scenarios through the simulator at DraftTek.com. Both scenarios I assumed we would cut Harvin and retain our 4th. First simulation I assumed the Eagles sent us Foles plus their 1,2,3 & 4 so I dropped QB as a priority position for us. Eagles 1,2,3,& 4 still comes up short of the value of the 6th pick according to the draft value chart. The simulator gave us the following draft:
Round Pick Team Selection Psn School 1 20 NY Jets Jake Fisher OT Oregon 2 37 NY Jets A.J. Cann OG South Carolina 2 52 NY Jets Eli Harold OLB34 Virginia 3 70 NY Jets Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB Oregon 3 84 NY Jets Hayes Pullard ILB USC 4 101 NY Jets Josh Harper WRF Fresno State 4 110 NY Jets David Johnson RBF Northern Iowa 7 198 NY Jets Wes Saxton TE South Alabama
2nd scenario, I had us acquiring the Browns 12th and their 2nd round pick for our 6 (1630 points for Browns 2 picks vs 1,600 for our 6 according to draft value chart). Here is what the simulator came up with:
Round Pick Team Selection Psn School
1 12 NY Jets Vic Beasley OLB34 Clemson 2 37 NY Jets A.J. Cann OG South Carolina 2 43 NY Jets Sammie Coates WRF Auburn 3 70 NY Jets Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB Oregon 4 101 NY Jets Terry Poole OT San Diego St 7 198 NY Jets Sean Mannion QB Oregon St

I was thinking about this this week while doing mindless work, that being the notion of trading back with CLE... apparently they really like Shelton. He'll be gone by 12, and wouldn't that be just great? We could nab an oline prospect like Collins and a WR like DGB or Strong?... or, maybe even Gurley...

So I take it the Bradford to Philly trade means Philly are out of the Mariotta sweepstakes?

So I take it the Bradford to Philly trade means Philly are out of the Mariotta sweepstakes? Browns could also have interest in Mariota -- I still see them as a potential trading partner if Mariota is on the board at 6. Gonna be a fascinating draft day. Only 7 weeks away.

If we trade back I'd love to do it with the Saints. Unlike the Browns their 13th and 31st pick are almost equal value to our #6.

I really like Mariota, but I have to say that getting #12 and #19 from Cleveland would be amazing.
Scherff at #12 and Gordon at #19.
Then draft a passrusher like Harold or Mauldin in the 2nd.
Goddamn that would be sweet

Agreed, but if they are trading up for Mariotta, I think you can command the 19th pick. QBs change the trade value somewhat, if they want the QB make them pay for it.

Exactly If Mariota is there at #6, then I'm making Cleveland, Philly, St. Louis or whoever pay above market value to get him. The draft value chart gets tossed out the window in that instance. This is a player that could change the fortune of your franchise for the next decade if he pans out. If you want him, then be prepared to pay for him. And if we pass on Mariota and he turns out to be a legit franchise QB...then no amount of draft picks will Ballbathere the aching in our collective balls. We'll be looking back on that trade in disgust for years.

In my opinion, any team who really covets Mariota and is willing to pay above market price for Mariota would be more likely to try to find a trade partner who picks before us in the draft. The Jets are one of the teams that could potentially draft him so why risk waiting and losing him if they are willing to pay a high price? I can definitely see Washington or Oakland trading back. I'm not saying the Jets trading back can't happen but I just don't see it as very likely for a team who wants the QB.
