I'm surprised I didn't comment on this thread before, thanks for the necro. I always liked Petty more than most just because of his mechanics and throwing motion and posted about him in other threads. He might have ran a simplified gimmick offense but he had to dissect a defense within seconds for his first read throws. He might have led the most up tempo offense in the entire NCAA.....even faster than Oregon. For a fourth and a seventh, this was a great pick. A prototypical QB with great size, arm strength, and mechanics. Now I hope he sits his ass on the bench for at least one year. I was as Mannion guy, but I think your analysis is spot-on. When you take a QB in the 4th round, it's because you see him as a depth guy first and foremost, and potentially a project who will evolve into someone good enough to challenge for a starter role or become trade bait in a couple of years. Good QB's are a very good investment if nothing else. Just look at the stiffs we and other QB-starved teams were contemplating to "solve" our problems. Pretty scary.
