It's not a clip, it's a magazine. Lots of good choices out there and Dick and others gave some solid advice.
There called biometric safes and are about the size of a shoe box, they recognize your finger prints and then pop open, designed to fit in a night stand. Great for keeping the nosey or kids out, but very weak as for as they can be opened (and destroyed) with a screw driver. I use a full on 700 lb full size gun safe out in the garage. I do not own guns for self protection and with a two year old grand son and living in one of the safest areas of the USA I am not ready for bed side protection. I like the wall safes that fit between the studs, big enough for a couple of guns and ammo and can be hidden with a picture or painting.
The hard core guys do not trust the biometric safes because they are not 100% reliable (or so they feel)and need a good battery to function.
Shotguns are great for home defense because they do not over penetrate as easily and end up killing the neighbor, are easy to understand, you point them rather then aim them, and the visual deterrent is huge.
You need to get to the range. There you should be able to rent different guns and find out what fits you best, any caliber above a .380 is plenty for HD, IMHO. And with modern hollow point ammo that expands on contact the over penetration issue is much less.
I'm on a revolver kick lately and would recommend them for the novice as there is no safety that you can fumble with in a pressure situation, instead they have a relativly long and stiff trigger pull that act as the safety, anyone can shoot these with little to no training, so if the wife or kids ever needed it they could make it work, easy to load, and unload.
I like semi autos, but there is somewhat more of a learning curve, many like the Glock do not use safeties but are like the revolver that rely on a long stiff trigger pull as a safety for the initial shot. To load a round into the chamber you have to rack the slide back, and some struggle physically with this like women and kids. Most semi autos come with magazines that hold 10 or more rounds and smaller magazines are not always easy to come by, and I believe NY has a 8 round limit?
I would recommend a S&W model 66 with a 4" barell, its a stainless steel, gun which makes it easier to maintain, it holds 6 rounds it's a .357 which is a big boy gun yet it will also shoot the more mild and very affordable .38 special. unlike Dicks ultra light (which is a fine light weight carry piece)it has enough mass and larger grips to absorb the recoil and will be much more pleasurable at the range. It is also known as the Combat Magnum, and the blued version is called a model 19. should run new about $700.
Get as much training as you can reasonably do and study up on your local laws.
I understand it is veery difficult to get a concealed carry license in NY, not sure, it may just be NYC.
Nice to see some one start a gun thread besides me.
