Also, on this day in 1989 the Jets drafted LB Jeff Lageman in the first round. in the 2nd round, They drafted Dennis Byrd out of Tulsa.... Jeff and Dennis had great careers as Jets...... We all know about Dennis Byrd's injury, and he is a brave man....

April 23 was also NFL Draft Day in 2005. I am sure we all remember the 2005 draft. That is the one where we traded our first & 7th round picks to Raiders for TE Doug Jolley and the Raiders 2nd rounder and 2 6ths.
We could have kept our #1 and taken TE Heath Miller from Virginia who went 4 picks later to the Steelers. Doug Jolley would play only 1 season for the Jets (29 catches / 324 Yards / 1 TD). Heath Miller is entering his 10th season as a Steeler (532 Catches/ 6,034 Yards/ 43 TDs). Or, we could have drafted Roddy White who went with the very next pick to Atlanta (765 catches / 10,357 Yards / 62 TDs).
We also got the Raiders 2nd round pick back in that deal. We used it to select K Mike Nugent from Ohio State. Thank you, Terry Bradway.
Some of our drafts have really sucked over the years. Please save us, Mac - we are counting on you.

Another Bradway blunder that doesn't get talked about enough was the straight up trade of Santana Moss for Laveranues Coles. Moss went on to have a great 10 year career with Washington. Hell, I think he's still with the Redskins. Meanwhile Coles only had like 1 good season when he returned and has been retired for 5 years.

Got to give him a itty bitty amount of credit though for that draft...They did get Sione Pouha who turned out to be a pretty good run stuffing NT, Kerry Rhodes, who was the last best FS we had, and Joel Dressen who turned out to be a very solid, versatile backup TE.

Agree -- those are some really nice mid and late round picks. Just think about the lost opportunity had we gotten solid starters in 1 & 2 that year. Could have been looking back at it as one of our best drafts ever.

Bumping last year's thread. Byrd/Lageman draft. Jolley/Nugent draft. Had it pretty well covered.

lageman wasn't half bad. i remember at the time the pick was booed. we all know about byrd. he was coming on strong as a player before tragically injured. as for the whole jolley mess, there's not much to say. bradway was clearly in over his head as gm and this trade proved it.

That may have been one of the worst draft day trades in the history of the NFL. Who in their rite mind would ever do that. A 4 yr old wouldn't b so stupid. Fucking. Obsession with taking first round TEs. God I hate this franchise sooooooooooooo much. I really do.

And to make matters even worse, a year after surrendering a first round pick for him, we sent Jolley off to Tampa. For a 6th rounder. 1 year later. We took OT Jacob Bender with the 6th from Tampa. Remember him? He played 2 games in 2007 and that was it for his NFL career.
