It was also on April 29 in 1980 that the Jets traded two first round picks to the SF 49ers to move up to #2 overall to select Johnny Lam Jones out of Texas. Jones had won an gold medal as a sprinter in the 1976 Olympics, but he could never match that level of performance on the football field.
The 1980 draft was not all bad. In the 2nd round we picked Darrol Ray, FS Oklahoma and in the 3rd we added Lance Mehl, LB, Penn State, both starters on some really good Jet defenses over the next 5 years.

That 2006 draft was one of Tanny's best for the Jets. In the mid & late rounds we also added Brad Smith, Leon Washington, Drew Coleman and Eric Smith.

at lest the jets did want to draft favre but got stuck with nagle. mehl was quite good. one of the long line of great pen state linebackers. too bad his knee got torn up. ray wasn't half bad. lam jones? the gu could certainly fly. i remember watching him get two steps on the db and then todd laying the ball right out there only for it to go between his hands.
