May 11, 1971Jets re-sign two of their own. QB Bob Davis and P Steve O'Neal. Davis, who originally signed a one year deal with the Jets during the 1970 season, went into 1971 3rd on the depth chart behind Joe Namath and Al Woodall. Injuries to Namath and Woodall forced Davis into action. He started 7 games in 1971, leading the Jets to a 3-4 record. He completed just over 40% of his passes and threw for 10 TDs during that season. He remained witht he team as a back-up in 1972 before being traded to the Saints before the start of the 1973 season.

On this date in 1971, the Jets also re-signed punter Steve O'Neal. O'Neal had been a 13th round pick for the Jets in the 1969 draft. He was the Jets punter for 4 years before being traded to the Saints in the same deal that saw Bob Davis ^^^ go to NO. He is best known for this NFL record 98 yard punt that he blasted in Denver in 1969:
He retired after the 1973 season to pursue a career as a dentist.
