May 12, 1977, after trying unsuccessfully to trade him, the Jets waived Joe Namath. Later in the month he would sign with the LA Rams. Namath started 4 games for the Rams in what would be his final season in the NFL. Just doesn't look right, does it?

i wept like a child..... because i was only 11 then .... I was a few years older, but its hard to remember how I felt about it back then. The 70s were a brutal decade for the Jets -- an entire decade without a winning record and they were in the middle 3 straight 3 win seasons when they let Namath go (after drafting Richard Todd).

To correct my original post from last year, today is the date in 1977 when Joe Namath signed with the Rams. He had been waived by the Jets in April. The Rams were comiing off of a 10-3-1 season in 1976, and a loss in the NFC Championship game behind a rookie QB (Pat Haden) and journeyman James Harris. The Rams thought Joe might be the missing piece to help get the Rams over the top. It did not work out that way. Joe would start the first 4 games of the season for LA, leading them to a 2-2 record. He would be benched in favor of Haden after a 16-40 4 interception game in a week 4 loss to the Bears. That game in Chicago would be the last game Joe would ever play.

It was the most horrifying day for me as a Jets fan.
up to May 12, 1977.
Then came November 22, 2012.

letting joe go was the best thing. it was pretty clear the jets were going with todd and joe didn't have his heart in the game. la was a place he liked with all of the glamour. too bad he didn't pan out.
