7/30/1975Joe Namath signs two year extension believed to be worth about $1MM to remain with the Jets. Namath was recruited heavily in that 1975 offseason by the Chicago Winds of the World Football League. The Winds were an expansion team that was counting on Namath to put them on the map. They even agreed to change their team colors to green & white in an effort to entice Namath to sign with the team. In May of that year, the Winds owner sent Namath's agent a contract with a $500,000 check that would be Joe's to keep as a first payment if Joe signed the contract. Other former NFL stars who jumped at the WFL cash included Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, Jim Kiick and Viking WR John Gilliam who signed with the Winds. Csonka tried to recruit Joe, knowing that his star power would help put the new league on the map. Ultimately, Namath turned down a 4 year $5 million contract with the Winds to remain in NY. The Winds would not survive the 75 season. They folded five games into the season after two of their investors pulled out of the deal. The league would fold about a month later. Namath would struggle for the Jets during that '75 season, throwing for only 2,200 yards (lowest total over a full season since his rookie year) and leading the league with 28 interceptions. 1975 would be the first of 3 consecutive 3-11 seasons. Namath during the 1975 season:

7/30/2010:
Fresh off of an AFC Championship Game appearance, the Jets would extend the contracts of Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum through the 2014 season. As we all know, only Rex would get to finish that contract.

75,76 and 77 Jets were a combined 9-33.... that was no fun ..... none Yup. Jets and Giants were both so bad through most of the 70s that my friends and I all had 2nd teams to root for. In addition to the Jets, I was a Ram fan back then -- gave me someone to cheer for in November, December & the playoffs after the Jets season inevitably had faded to irrelevance by October.

75,76 and 77 Jets were a combined 9-33.... that was no fun ..... none boy, that was a real dismal time. namath, woodall, demory, they just didn't have much of a team. charlie winner wasn't, holtz quit after 1 season, they finally got smart and hired michaels but then got stupid again. i remember watching bill mazer's show on one of the local channels and sam deluca doing the pre season.

Had moved from Rockland Co.to Buffalo Summer of 1975...was 10. Still stuck with the Jets...went to Bills Jets home opening here in 75...Namath, Simpson...Jets down 21-14 at the half... Lost 42-14....still, here I am routing for this club.... Someday its gotta finally pay off...

I don't know much about the jets history from '71-'79 other than there were some rough patches during those years... what was namath's play like during the bulk of his post-SB years? Was the broadway joe thing mainly a function of his post-SB persona? How did he become such a fable in Jets lore beyond the SB win (tho that can't be downplayed after 40+ years lol)

Was the broadway joe thing mainly a function of his post-SB persona? How did he become such a fable in Jets lore beyond the SB win (tho that can't be downplayed after 40+ years lol) In my opinion, Joe's legend was built in his first 5 years in the league. From what I recall, he was already Broadway Joe by the end of the 60s. He came into the league and set records, turned a team that was a joke into a contender and a Champion, took over the City of NY from the Giants, and elevated the profile of not only the Jets, but the entire AFL. His off field persona didn't hurt, being the ultimate rebel in what was a rebel league. I am too young to remember the first couple of years of Joe's career -- earliest season that I remember is the 68 season which cemented his legend (and my fandom). By the time the 70s rolled around, he was a shell of the guy who set records in the AFL, mostly due to injury and the inability of the Jets to surround him with a competent cast.
