August 4, 2011The Jets would grant Jerricho Cotchery his release. Earlier in the week the Jets had signed Plaxico Burress, and the day before they brought Derrick Mason in for a visit. From the Daily News on 8/4/11: "Jerricho Cotchery's seven-year career with the Jets ended in bizarre fashion Thursday. The morning after reports surfaced that free agent wide receiver Derrick Mason was visiting the Jets facility, Cotchery revealed that he likely wouldn't return. "It's time to move on," Cotchery told The Daily News after the morning walk-through. "If (Mason) passes the physical, he's on the team and I won't be." On the surface, it appeared as if the Jets preferred the cheaper Mason. Eventually, Rex Ryan confirmed that the team had released Cotchery, but did so only after the veteran requested it. Ryan didn't give particulars about when and why Cotchery made the request to be traded or released. By all appearances, Cotchery's lack of an opportunity to start played a significant role in the parting of the ways."Burress would play one season for the Jets and caught 45 passes for 8 TDs. Mason would catch 13 passes in 5 games for the Jets in 2011 before the Jets traded him to Houston for a conditional pick. Cotchery has caught over 125 passes and 13 TDs for the Steelers and Panthers since leaving the Jets. We should have kept J Co, he was a great Jet. Its a shame he could not finish his career here. I will never forget this play, in OT against the Browns in 2010. He pulled his groin muscle on this play, but after the injury occurred he still laid out for this reception to help set up a game winning FG. It was a thing of beauty. Jerricho is and always will be a Jet in my mind.

Once again proving that Rex is the go to man when it comes to picking WRs

Starting with the lockout and shortened free agency period, etc that was just a bizarre offseason compounded with some bizarre moves from our team. I hated seeing Braylon, Cotchery go while replacing them with Plax, Mason, and signing Tone long term. Could never stand Plax no matter what team he was on. I believe that offseason was the turning point of the Rex-Tanny regime and started the teams downward trend.

Such a stupid move, this was the beginning of the end for Tannenbaum

Hey remember when Rex said he felt D Mason could "catch 90 to 100 balls in this offense"?
Fun times!

To this day, I don't get why Mason failed so miserably with the Jets. I mean the guy was a pretty solid receiver his entire career, why did he suddenly fall flat in NY?

I still can't get to upset about letting Cotch go. Yes it was done in an absoulte awful way, but he was very very bad the year before (outside of that Cleveland catch). It really looked like he was done to me.

Such a stupid move, this was the beginning of the end for Tannenbaum Exactly. Tannenbaum never found adequate replacements for the guys he let go, and in this case, he dumped a character guy and great contributor for a bad attitude-POS who lasted 6 games.

Pats just scored making it 14-11 so we needed a big drive and he came thru....lead to an unbelievable catch by Tone in the back of the endzone for 6!

You can mark Rex's decline to the day this happened. All downhill from there. Used to get lambasted on JI for suggesting it. Glad you guys have come around with hindsight.
