August 7, 1971
The Jets open up their 1971 pre-season schedule with an exhibition game against the Lions in Tampa Stadium. The Lions won the game 28-24, but far more significant than the score was the knee injury suffered by Joe Namath. Reserve running back Lee White took a handoff from Joe. He was hit and fumbled the ball. Namath tried to make the tackle after Lions LB Mike Lucci recovered the fumble. He got hit by another defender and tore up his knee. Namath would return for the last 4 games of the 71 season and go 2-2. The Jets would finish with a 6-8 record.
The following week the Jets played the Chiefs on Monday Night Football. THe Youtube clip above is the opening of that telecast. It opens up with the clip of the play where Namath got injured and finishes up with an interview of Namath by the great Howard Cosell. This also represents Frank Gifford's MNF debut. Bad memory, but a great video. Enjoy!!!

Had todays medical procedures been available to Joe while he was sustaining his numerous injuries, it would of been interesting to see what type of numbers, and wins he would of put up. Anyway, great YouTube clip from the early 70's. That's when Monday night football was really special, and a really big deal.

I remember being told about this injury that night as I was a junior in high school. Crushing news to the start of the a new season to lose your quarterback. We were dragging the avenue in my 69 Dodge Dart and everyone knew I loved the Jets, when someone pulled up next to me and told me the news about Namath. I've watched replays of this many times and always thought it was a cheap hit.

I was watching when Namath got hurt, feeling that little kid disappointment in knowing he'd be lost for a long time. This after he got hurt in 1970 and missed the last 10 games or so. BTW teh 1970 game was the first Jets game I went to. So you can blame me for the 45 year shit slide it's been ever since.

Today's average QB isn't even getting close to try and make that tackle. Why do you think guys like Brady haven't had major problems?

Had the same thought when I watched the video -- no way a QB today tries to make that play. And in a pre-season game on top of it. Too much of a competitor for his own good.

cosell always had that way of interviewing without being critical. he was the same with ali too. but really namath was just so snakebit with injury. if it wasn't his knee it was a separated shoulder. i doubt if he played over half the games from 1970 on.
