August 18, 2001The Jets would host the defensing Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens in the 2nd pre-season game of the Herman Edwards era. Jets were coming off of an ugly 20-10 loss to the Falcons. For the Ravens, it would be thier first live game action since their Super Bowl victory over the Giants. They were scheduled to meet the Eagles at Veterans Stadium the week before, however, both teams refused to take the field due to the condition of the Veteran Stadium turf. The Jets won the game, 16-3. They were led by rookie RB Lamont Jordan, who ran for 57 yards and the game;s only TD, and a defensive front that kept constant pressure on all 3 Ravens QBs: Elvis Grbac, Randall Cunningham and Chris Redman. Chad Pennington would play the 2nd half after Vinny Testaverde played the first. Pennington would lead the Jets only TD drive, hitting on a big play to Matthew Hatchette that set up Jordan's 10 yard TD run. The Jets win snapped a 12 game pre-season winning streak for the Ravens. Both teams would go on to 10-6 regular season records and make the playoffs as a wild card. The Ravens would beat Miami in the wild card round, but lose to the Steelers in the Divisional playoffs. The Jets lost to the Raiders in the Wild Card game. They would make the playoffs 3 times in Edwards 5 year tenure, and he would give us one of the great post game coaches rants ever.

Speaking of Herm's post game rant, here it is:
It was Oct 30, 2002 and the Jets were coming off of a 24-21 loss to Cleveland that dropped them to 2-5 on the season. They would go on to win 7 of their last 9 and qualify for the playoffs where they beat Peyton and the Colts 41-0 before losing to Oakland in the Divisional Round. I really thought we had something special with that team and the young, pre-injury Chad.

Spectacular.. Thanks Lith. Herm was great.. I miss his passion... Yeah, but after watching that....I remember all the shady talk of him refuting the rumors that he wasn't going anywhere...then all of a sudden having a job in KC.

Spectacular.. Thanks Lith. Herm was great.. I miss his passion... Yeah, but after watching that....I remember all the shady talk of him refuting the rumors that he wasn't going anywhere...then all of a sudden having a job in KC. Yup - don't like the way it ended with him. He clearly had one foot out the door his last year and was just looking to find a way to KC. Don't remember who it was at KC that we wanted to work for, but after the 4-12 season in 05, it was time to move on. At least we got a draft pick from KC for him -- would up being Leon Washington, which was a pretty solid 4th round pick.

Yeah, but after watching that....I remember all the shady talk of him refuting the rumors that he wasn't going anywhere...then all of a sudden having a job in KC. that's where he lost me too yeah I think he wanted a contract extension with 2 years still left on his deal, and we wouldn't give it to him (probably knowing that he wouldn't get it either), so essentially he really did end up quitting on us. After all of this talk of "I wont quit I wont quit"....yeah yeah....

I'm still not sure why he gets so much hate from the fanbase. He was a great motivator and overall a good x's and o's coach. It's not his fault the roster was awful most of those years.

Will always have a soft spot for Herm...that '02 season was the only one to rival the fun from '98 and looked like the start of something big. That smashing of the Packers in the season finale is my all-time personal favorite game to this day.

herm wasn't that bad. he was stuck with a china doll at qb and some pretty shaky draft moves by bradway like the jolley trade. i will always remember herm for his picking up the pisarcik fumble in 79.
