August 21, 2010
The Jets would play their 2nd pre-season game of the 2010 season. Coming off of a 31-16 Snoopy Bowl defeat against the Giants a week earlier, the Jets were looking to get in the win column against the Carolina Panthers. The Jets would win the game in a defensive battle that would not see a TD scored by either team. The Jets stars of the game were Nick Folk, who was 3-3, connecting on FGs of 36, 43 & 49 yards, and Vernon Gholston. Yes, Vernon Gholston. This game was the highlight of Gholston’s career. He had 5 tackles including two for loss and hurried Carolina QBs Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen on several occasions. He would finish the 2010 regular season with 7 tackles and be released by the team following the season. Cimini's comments on Gholston from his column after the game, "VG is OK. Strange, but true: Vernon Gholson posted a team-high five tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage. Give him credit; he was aggressive at the point of attack, shed his blocks well and made a couple of hustle plays. They will need Gholston to contribute on the D-line now that Ropati Pitoitua (Achilles' tendon) is out for the season."
Unfortunately, it would prove to be the only solid game, preseason or otherwise, in Gholston's NFL career. In the photo above, Gholston is getting ready to tackle Mike Goodson in the 3rd quarter of that preseason game. The same Mike Goodson that the Jets would sign 3 years later during the 2013 offseason. In May 2013, he was be arrested on drug and weapons charges. He would play 2 games for the Jets in the 2013 season before suffering a season ending knee injury. The Jets would release Goodson in 2014 when he failed to show up for mandatory minicamp. Vernon Gholston and Mike Goodson in the same photo -- two for the price of one. Two painful memories in one thread. I am getting good at this.

These threads make me angry, I hate them. But, this is an uplifting and inspirational story today. It shows that no matter how bad you might be at something, there is always a chance that you will be able to overcome the fact that you suck and look competent -- even if just for a day. Vernon Gholston should act as an inspiration for us all to outperform our ability today.

imagine if the "ghost" or another player taken with his pick panned out. his draft class is right in the thick of things. and then be happy he's been gone long enough to forget.
