August 22, 1997The Jets would travel to Orlando to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to close out the first preseason under new Head Coach Bill Parcells. The Jets had hired Parcells to turn the franchise around after the 1996 season and a 2 year 4-28 record under Coach Rich Kotite. Over the previous 10 years, the Jets had averaged just 5 wins per season and had just one playoff appearance, lucking into the playoffs with an 8-8 record in 1991 only to lose to the Oilers in the Wild Card game, 17-10. The decade of futility was capped by the 2 year Kotite era. The Jets would defeat Tampa 15-9 in overtime to close out a perfect 4-0 preseason. It was an ugly game, and the coach was not happy with the team's performance. In the 3rd quarter, Jets rookie kicker John Hall missed an extra point after a 21 yard TD pass from Glenn Foley to Wayne Chrebet broke a 3-3 tie. The Bucs tied the score at 9-9 when Scott Milanovich connected with Brice Hunter on a 21-yard pass play with Ray Mickens in coverage. But Michael Husted also missed the extra point to force the overtime. The Jets won in overtime on a 7 yard TD run by Leon Johnson, which was set up by a 48 yard pass play from Foley to Chrebet. 4 wins in a month after 4 wins over the prior two seasons. It may have just preseason, but it was clear that a new era was about to begin. An era that would see the Jets average almost 9 wins per season and make 7 playoff appearances in the next 14 years. I find it interesting that we still were playing guys like Back-up QB Glenn Foley and Wayne Chrebet in OT in the 4th preseason game. A coach would get killed for that today.

Finally a happy date in jets history. Thanks! The Seahawks opening day that year was on my bday - August 31 I think. We smoked the seahags 45-3 or something. Thought we might go 16-0 in 97. Yanks also retired mattinglys number that day.
