August 23, 1960The New York Titans acquired the rights to RB Bill Mathis in a trade with the Houston Oilers. The Oilers acquired the rights to DE Don Floyd in the deal. Mathis would play his entire 10 year career in the AFL with the Titans/Jets franchise, rushing for 3,589 yards and scoring 46 TDs. He was AFL All Pro in 1961, when he was 2nd in the league in rushing with 846 yards and 3rd with 7 rushing TDs. Later in his career he became mostly a short yardage/goal line specialist for the Jets, while Emerson Boozer and Matt Snell got the majority of the carries. Mathis played in Super Bowl III, and had 3 carries for 2 yards. He also had 3 receptions for 20 yards against the Colts. Mathis was in the news a few years ago when he became one of several retired players to sue the NFL. The lawsuit charged that in the 1990s the NFL created a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee, a supposedly independent board to study the effects on the players. The committee had several people with NFL affiliations, including its chairman, Dr. Elliot Pelman, a Jets physician and rheumatologist "who lacked any specialized or education relating to concussions," according to the suit.

Also on this day, 8/23/2003, the Jets played the Giants in their annual pre-season game. The Jets would win the game 15-14, but much more significant was the injury suffered by Chad Pennington. Late in the 2nd quarter, Pennington was scrambled while being pursued by Giants LB Brandon Short. Just as Chad was throwing the ball away, Short caught him from behind and pulled Pennington down. Pennington suffered a broken and dislocated wrist on the play and would miss the first half of the season. Vinny Testaverde would start for the Jets in place of Chad, and played the first 7 games of the regular season, leading the Jets to a 2-5 record. Pennington would return for the Jets week 9, ironically against the Giants. He would lead a dramatic 4th quarter comeback throwing TD passes to Anthony Becht and Santana Moss to erase a 28-14 deficit in the final 6 minutes to force overtime. The Jets would ultimately lose when a blocked 51 yd Doug Brien FG would lead to a game winning kick by Brett Conway with 8 seconds remaining in OT.

if only chad had stronger bones. this guy came on for vinny and pretty much turned the team around. he really had the right leadership ability and it's just so sad that his body failed him so often. imo he could've been better than brady.
