August 24, 2010
The Jets agreed to a 7 year contract extension with Nick Mangold. The summer of 2010 was dominated by the ongoing saga of the Darrelle Revis contract negotiations and it came as a surprise to both Mangold and Jet fans when the Jets got the deal done with Nick. He signed a 7-year, $55MM deal that made him, at the time, the highest paid Center in the NFL. From Rich Cimini’s column on ESPN.com: "It came out of nowhere, it went by really fast and here we are," Mangold said moments after signing the deal. "It'll take a couple of days to sink in."
Because of restrictive rules in the CBA for an uncapped season, and because the team seemingly had prioritized Revis, Mangold had "resigned myself to the fact that it wasn't getting done." He was outspoken before training camp, expressing frustration over the lack of dialogue between the two sides, but he decided against holding out. That, no doubt, scored points with management.
"I could not be more excited to have it done and be here as long as I could imagine," said Mangold, a two-time Pro Bowl selection.

August 24, 2013The Jets would play the Giants in the for the Annual Snoopy Bowl Trophy, which Rex Ryan was proud to be able to bring back to Florham Park after a hard fought 24-21 overtime victory. But the victory came at a cost and included more drama than you would ever want out of a preseason game. During the week before the game, Ryan had named rookie QB Geno Smith as the starter for the game. This would be Geno's chance to cement his role as the team's starter for the upcoming season. Smith would struggle (ok, he sucked) while playing into the 4th quarter. He was 16-30 with 3 interceptions and an embarrassing safety where he ran out of the end zone. Geno’s post game comments about running a pro offense as reported in USA Today: "It felt natural. I've had a ton of experience in practice with it," Smith said. "I'm getting better with it, it felt natural. The offensive line did a great job of protecting, I was able to stand back there and go through my reads and hit open receivers." It didn't look as if Smith was going through his reads, and even Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara, who had an interception, said the rookie "was locking onto his receivers," which allowed Amukamara to jump the route.
Smith said that "other than those mistakes that I put entirely myself in, I felt pretty relaxed out there."Mark Sanchez came on in the 4th quarter, and I am sure we all recall the hit he took from Marvin Austin that injured his shoulder and ended not only his season, but also his Jets career. Geno became the Jets starter for the 2013 season by default. After the game, Rex ‘s post game presser included this classic rant/meltdown, assets.sbnation.com/assets/3102553/rexdance.gif

Here is Rex's post game presser, which includes the sideways meltdown:
There are certain moments in a franchise's history that can help shape the future of a franchise for better or for worse. That 8/24/13 game was one of those moments. Geno and Sanchez were competing for the starting job all summer. After his performance against the Giants, it was clear to even the most ardent Geno supporter that he was not ready. Sanchez likely would have started that season and Geno would have had time to learn the pro game from the bench. How much different might the last two years have gone, had Sanchez not take that hit from Marvin Austin.

I defended the buffoon at the time, but in hindsight Rex was an idiot for sending his 4 year starter out there with a 3rd string OL just to win the snoopy bowl.....borderline pathetic

As much as I loved what he brought to the team initially and as much fun as those first two seasons were, his act wore thin.

Well not denial... wanted to give him benefit of maybe it was horrible GM and shit QBs But then you see him go to fuckin Buffalo and make all the exact same mistakes in some kind of stubborn defiance or something. LOL. He is so fuckin stubborn it's pretty crazy he's a coach. Good salesman tho. As we all know that counts for something in life to people in workplaces. You can be absoultely terrible at your job, as long as you get all buddy buddy with everyone.
