August 28 has been a slow day in Jets history – only significant items were a couple of trades involving offensive linemen that occurred 38 years apart. Just a couple more days until I can talk about real games in these threads. Been some good finds in the offseason, but other days like today the best you can do is come up with a couple of jag linemen.
August 28, 1974
The Jets acquired C Wayne Mulligan in trade with the Chicago Bears.
The Jets sent the Bears their 7th round pick in the 1975 draft (168 overall). The Bears in turn packaged the 168th pick and a 1976 5th rounder to the Colts to acquire the rights to OG Noah Jackson and another pick. Jackson would be a starting guard for the Bears for the next 9 years. Mulligan, whom the Jets acquired in the deal, would be the Jets starter for 2 seasons, 1974 & 1975. In yesterday’s entry, I mentioned that Mulligan started 1 season between John Schmitt and Joe Fields – he actually started 2 years, before retiring after the 1975 season. Schmitt played his last season in Green Bay, so there was a 2 year gap between Schmitt and Joe Fields, which was filled by Mulligan. He played 5 years for St Louis Cardinals who dealt him to the Bears just 5 days before the Bears shipped him out to NY.

In another swap of offensive linemen, the Jets sent OT Wayne Hunter to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for OT Jason Smith. Hunter had been a solid 6th OL for the Jets from 2008 – 10 , often playing in goal line and short yardage “jumbo” packages. He was given the opportunity to start in the 2011 season. It did not work out well as Hunter seemed to perfect the matador style of blocking -- get the fuck out of the way or you might get hurt.
Jason Smith, on the other hand, had been a second overall pick of the St. Louis Rams in the 2009 draft. He did not work out for the Rams, and the deal was struck hoping that the change of scenery would help both men and both teams. Unfortunately for the Jets, Rams, Smith & Hunter, it didn’t. Both players are now out of the league.
