September 2, 1984
The Jets open the 1984 season with a trip to the Indianapolis Hoosier Dome. They would be taking on the Indianapolis Colts in the first game ever to be played in Indianapolis. 6 months earlier, the Colts left Baltimore and made the move to Indianapolis. The Jets had also completed a move of their own in 1984, moving from Shea Stadium across the river to the Meadowlands. 7 year veteran Pat Ryan would get his first opportunity as a starter after beating out Ken O’Brien in the preseason quarterback competition. The position became available after the Jets had traded Richard Todd to New Orleans in the off-season. The Colts would jump out to a 2nd quarter 7-0 lead on a 3 yard TD run by Curtis Dickey. Ryan, who struggled on the day, would connect twice on TD passes to Mickey Shuler as the Jets built a 16-7 lead in the 3rd quarter behind a dominant defense. Mark Gastineau sacked Colts QB Mike Pagel 4 times in the game and forced two fumbles, both of which were converted into scores. The first fumble led to a 29 yard Pat Leahy FG to give the Jets a 10-7 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. The 2nd big play was a strip sack, also by Gastineau, that was returned for a TD by Greg Buttle with 1:35 on the clock. Jets won by a final score of 23-14. The Jets would open up that 84 season with a 6-2 record, but they would go 1-7 down the stretch. Ryan would be replaced by Ken O’Brien for the last month of the season and the Jets would finish with a disappointing 7-9 record.

I wish I could have seen him play. It must have been fun having the guy everyone hates on your team.

that whole sack exchange was one pretty good line. gastineau was good but imo it was playing beside klecko, lyons and salaam that made him much better. i remember the mid 80's replacement games when gastineau crossed the picket line and he didn't dominate when maaybe he should have.
