September 5, 1993
It was an inspirational start to the 1993 season for the New York Jets as Dennis Byrd walked out to midfield for the pre-game coin toss. This would be Byrd’s first appearance at the Meadowlands Stadium after suffering a spinal injury in a game against the Chiefs in November of the previous season. The Jets won that coin toss, but little else went well once the game started and the Jets fell to John Elway and the Broncos, 26-20.
The Jets turned the ball over twice in the first half, first on a Terance Mathis fumble and then on a Boomer Esiason interception. The Jets defense stiffened both times and forced the Broncos to settle for field goals and a first quarter 6-0 lead. Broncos rookie 2nd round pick from Stanford, Glyn Milburn, took the game over in the 2nd quarter after the Jets tied it on a pair of Cary Blanchard FGs. Milburn carried for 15 yards to set up the first Broncos TD in the final seconds of the second quarter, and then added receptions of 50 yards and a 25 yard TD reception in the 3rd quarter as the Broncos built a 26-6 lead.
Esiason tried to rally the Jets. He tossed 2 TD passes in the 4th quarter, connecting with Johnny Mitchell and Rob Moore, and finished the game with over 370 yards passing, but it was too little too late as the Jets could only get within 6. “It’s the home opener for a lot of new Jets as well as a hero’s welcome for Dennis Byrd,” Esiason said. “To come out sloppy like that is real disappointing.”
Rob Moore had a big day, after being shut out in the first half, he finished the game with 9 receptions for 142 yards and the 1 TD. “Two turnovers in the first half, that took us out of the game early,” said Moore.
"This was a welcome home for Dennis Byrd," Esiason said after the game. "If everybody felt like I did, we had a tear in our eye." In addition to the opening coin toss, Byrd thanked Jets fans at halftime for their prayers during his recovery.
