Sept. 6, 1998The Jets opened up the 1998 season with a trip to Candlestick Park (or whatever it might have been called at the time) in San Francisco. Although they would fall 36-30 in overtime, the game was a classic and the 1998 season was one of the best that the Jets have ever had.
During the preseason, Coach Parcells had named Glenn Foley as the Jets starting QB and Vinny Testaverde was to serve as his back up. Foley would have a huge game in the loss throwing for over 400 yards and 3 TDs, but Steve Young would come up just as big, throwing for 363 yards and matching Foley with 3 TDs. The two teams combined for over 1,000 yards of offense, with nearly 800 of that coming through the air.
But it would prove to be a record setting run in overtime that would send the Jets home on the short end of a classic game.
After the Jets 2nd drive in OT stalled at around midfield, a Nick Gallery punt pinned the 49ers deep in their own end, at the 4-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Garrison Hearst would run through the Jets breaking 5 or 6 tackles while going 96 yards for the game winning TD.
After the game, Safety Victor Green summed up how the Jets defense was feeling, “I suspect it will be talked about as the best run in 49ers history. Its really not deserving of that. It should have been a 5 or 10 yard gain, but we turned it into 96. Its a disgrace to the defense."
The Jets would wind up losing the next week to Baltimore before they rebounded and won 12 of the last 14 behind Vinny Testaverde who ended up starting 13 of the last 14 games that season. He finished 12-1 in the games he started, while Foley, who got injured week 2 against Baltimore was 0-3.
So, the aging journeyman veteran replaces the injured young starter and leads the team to a 12-win season. Could history repeat itself?
