For the first time in over 30 years, the Jets would take the field with a future Hall of Fame quarterback under center as Brett Favre made his Jets debut on 9/7/08. The Jets traveled to Miami for a Divisional matchup with the Dolphins to open the season. The Dolphins, of course, were quarterbacked by former Jet Chad Pennington, who was released the day after the Jets signed Favre.
The Brett Favre era would get off to a fast start as he hit Jerricho Cotchery with a 56 yard TD bomb on the Jets 2nd possession.
It was an efficient performance for Favre who finished the day 15 of 22 for 194 yards and 2 TDs. The 2nd TD was a 22 yard strike to Chansi Stuckey on a Favre scramble on a 4th and 13 play. Kicker Mike Nugent had been injured earlier in the game, so the Jets were forced to go for it on 4th down. Thomas Jones added a 5 yard TD run to give the Jets a 20-7 lead heading into the 4th quarter.
Pennington led a furious 4th quarter rally in the final minutes as he hit TE David Martin for an 11 yd TD with 3:32 left on the clock. After the Jets went 3 and out, Pennington and the Phins would get one last chance to pull it out in the final two minutes. The Dolphins got to the Jets red zone, but a Darrelle Revis interception in the end zone sealed a 20-14 win.

After the game Favre was asked who it felt to play for his new team, “"I know I made the right decision," he said. "I'm a New York Jet. I don't know about a native New Yorkian, or however you say it. Hey, I'm happy to be a Jet. It was shaky, but it's a good start," Favre would add. "It's a win, and you can never question a win."
Ultimately the Jets would fall short of the playoffs in 2008. After an 8-3 start, Favre tore a bicep muscle and didn’t play well down the stretch as the Jets dropped four of their last 5. Chad Pennington and the Dolphins would get the last laugh, as Pennington outplayed Favre in that 08 season and the Dolphins won the AFC East title.
