September 9, 1961
For today's entry, we go way back, to the 2nd season of the AFL. The New York Titans would begin their second AFL season with a trip to Nickerson Field on the campus of Boston University for an Eastern Conference showdown with the Boston Patriots. The Titans and Patriots met twice during the League’s inaugural season of 1960, with the Patriots winning both meetings, 28-24 at the Polo Grounds in September and 38-21 in a Friday night matchup in in November. The Patriots received the opening kickoff, but Boston’s kick returner, Ray Ratkowski lost the ball and the Titans were set up at the Patriots 17 yard line. Several plays later, Titan QB Al Dorow faked a handoff to BIll Mathis and went around right end for 2 yards and an early 7-0 lead. Dorow had a strong game for the Titans, finishing 15-26 for 183 yards and 2 TDs, with 1 interception. His first TD came after the Pats had tied the game in the 2nd quarter on Babe Parilli’s 1 yd run. He hit Thurlow Cooper for 16 yards and a TD to give the Titans a 14-7 halftime lead. Boston took a 17-14 3rd quarter lead as GIno Cappelletti, who played both WR and Kicker, scored from both positions. First a 10 yard TD reception from Parilli tied the game and he added a 27 yard FG to give Boston a 17-14 lead. Photo is of Babe Parilli dropping to pass against the Titans on 9/9/61 at Nickerson Field The Titans would take the lead for good in the 4th quarter when Dorow connected with Don Maynard on a TD pass of 43 yards. Cappelletti would add another FG to cut the Titans lead to 1 at 21-20, but it was as close as the Patriots would get. The Pats had one last chance to defeat the Titans, but Cappellettis’s 3rd FG attempt on the day missed and the Titans came away from the BU campus with their first win ever against the Patriots franchise.

And while we are going back in time, on this date a year earlier, in a game that did not involve the Titans, the first AFL game ever was played. It also took place at Nickerson field in Boston as the Patriots played host to the Denver Broncos. The game was played on a Friday night. Most of the Patriot home games were played on Friday or Saturday nights back then. The Patriots did not want to schedule their games to go head to head against the NFL's Giants, who were the favorite of most New Englanders at the time. If either Boston College or Harvard was playing on Saturday, they would typically schedule their game on theFriday night. The Titans would kick off for the first time two days later at the Polo Grounds against Buffalo. The Broncos and head coach Frank Filchok (pictured above) would come away with a 13-10 victory.
