September 21: Lotsa record setting shit, memorable games and other milestones have happened on this day. We will start with the oldest and move forward:
September 21, 1969
Jets punter Steve O’Neal set a record that can never be broken. He nailed a punt that netted 98 yards on this date against the Denver Broncos, from the Jets 1 yard line to the Broncos 1 yard line. It is possible to kick a 99 yard punt, but that would be a touchback, so you cannot net more than 98 yards on a punt.
From New York Jets.com:
“I just hit it well,” he said, “But of course back then the goalposts were on the goal line and they were just to my right. So I had less than 10 yards to kick the ball, in a real tight situation. It went about 75 yards in the air, it went over the returner's head and when it hit the ground it just took off like a groundball.”
In the thin air, the ball traveled all the way to the Broncos’ 33, glancing off the outstretched hands of punt returner Bill Thompson, a rookie like O'Neal. Then it took a perfect bounce, rolled to a stop and was downed at the 1.
Following video is of O’Neal discussing his career as a punter and the record setting punt. Video of the kick itself is at around the 1:00 mark:
The Jets went on to lost that game 21-19, but it was only the first of several record setting Jets performances that have occurred on Sept 21.

September 21, 1980The Jets came into week 3 of the 1980 season with an 0-2 record, having lost to the Colts and the Bills. In those first two games, QB Richard Todd completed 30 passes for 368 yards, combined. His 19 pass completions in week 2 against Buffalo equaled his career high. Nobody could possibly have expected that Todd would set an all time NFL record for pass completions in that week 3 game, but that is exactly what he did. He completed 42 of 60 passes for 447 yards and 3 TDs with 1 interception. RB Clark Gaines was on the receiving end of 17 of those passes for 160 receiving yards. It was not enough however as the Jets fell at home to the San Francisco 49ers, 37-27. It was all SF early, as the 49ers scored on each of their first 4 drives. On their opening drive, QB Steve DeBerg hit Charles Young for a 15 yard score. On the next two drives, their young back-up QB, a guy by the name of Joe Montana, led them to scores. Late in the first quarter, Montana ran 5 yards for a score and he would connect with Dwight Clark for a 20 yard TD and a 21-0 lead. The Niners would extend their lead to 30-6, before Todd started to lead his team back, playing against a soft defense, he hit a lot of short, underneath routes to Gaines to keep the ball moving. Gaines described the action that afternoon, “They played me with a linebacker trying to cover me, and you either cover me one on one with a linebacker or you double Bruce Harper on the other side. So pick your poison. They picked the slow guy. They doubled Bruce and I was open back out of the backfield.” Todd connected on 3 4th quarter “garbage time” TDs to make the score appear to be respectable, but the home crowd was not impressed. When Todd tied Namath’s team record with his 34th completion, the crowd booed. Even when he passed George Blanda’s all time record of 37 completions, the crowd booed him even more. During that 1980 season, Todd would only exceed 20 completions in a game one more time. Todd’s record would be broken in 1994 by Drew Bledsoe, who still holds the record today after a 45-70 performance in a Patriot victory against Minnesota. Todd still holds the team record, although it was equaled by Vinny Testaverde in a 32-31 defeat of the Seattle Seahawks in 1998. September 21, 1986Week 3 of the 1986 season would become a classic. Fans old enough to have seen this one will never forget it. The Jets hosted the Dolphins and Dan Marino in week 3 of the 86 season. They came into the game at 1-1, having defeated the Bills in week 1, but falling to the Patriots in week 2. The Dolphins also came into that game with a 1-1 record. The two teams, and the two QBs put on a record setting show for the fans that would remembered today, 29 years later. The game started quietly enough, with the Dolphins taking a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, thanks to a 6-yard Marino TD toss to James Pruitt. Johnny Hector, who started in place of the injured Freeman McNeil rushed for 2 2nd quarter TDs to give the Jets a 17-7 2nd quarter lead. Marino would answer with 2 more TD passes in the quarter, 1 1 yard pass to Dan Johnson and a 13-yarder to Mark Duper. Not to be outdone, Jets QB Ken O’Brien answered back with 2 long TD passes of his own, a 50-yarder and a 65-yard connection, both to Wesley Walker. The Jets had a 31-21 halftime lead. The 3rd quarter was a sloppy one for the Jets. O’Brien would be picked off by Miami CB Don McNeal and the Jets also lost a fumble in the quarter and the Dolphins took advantage of the Jets mistakes. Marino connected on two more TD passes, his 4th and 5th on the day, hitting Duper for 46 yards and Bruce Hardy on a 1-yarder. The two TDs surrounded a Fuad Reveiz field goal and the Dolphins carried a 38-31 lead into the 4th quarter. The Jets tied it up on a Dennis Bligen run early in the 4th. Wesley Walker was getting himself fitted for the goat horns after his fumble set up Miami at the Jets 27 yard line. Several plays later, Marino connected with Mark Clayton from the 4 yard line and Miami was up 45-38. “I was down on myself because I fumbled the ball. I Thought I lost the game for my team,” Walker said. “I was grateful I was given the opportunity to make it up.” And make up for it he did. After a Miami punt, the Jets had one final chance as they got the ball back with 1:04 remaining at the Dolphins 38. The drive began with a 5 yard completion to Mickey Shuler, and then an 8 yard scramble by O’Brien. From the Phins 49, they connected on a “hook and lateral” play where O’Brien connected with Shuler who lateraled to Hector for a 28-yard gain down to the Dolphin 21. The Jets used their last timeout with 5 seconds left. From the New York Times:
There were eight defensive backs wearing Miami uniforms on the field, but Walker slanted to his left once he got over the middle and O'Brien rifled the ball to him. Walker caught it on the 1 and rolled in.
Dwight Stephenson, the Dolphins' center, was given the call at the coin flip for the overtime period. As he always does, he called ''heads.'' It was tails.
Two passes to Al Toon and runs by Tony Paige and Hector moved the ball to the Dolphins' 43. The Jets were now in a position to go for a short pass to set up a field goal for Pat Leahy, whose 32-yarder earlier had given him 15 straight over two seasons.
''They're trying to stop you from making field goals,'' explained the Jets' offensive coordinator, Rich Kotite. ''We got Wesley one-on-one with McNeal.'' Because the Miami defense was playing at medium depth, Walker was alone with McNeal and outsprinted him as O'Brien unloaded his final pass of the game. Walker cradled the ball near the end zone and stormed in for the winner.
Video is of the 4 TD passes from O’Brien to Walker: O’Brien finished with 479 yards and 4 TDs (all to Wesley Walker). Only Joe Namath ever threw for more for the Jets, he had 490 in a 44-34 victory against the Colts in 1972. Marino was 30-50 for 448 yards and 6 TDs. It was the only 6 TD game of Marino’s storied career. The two teams combined for 884 passing yards -- a record at the time. It is still the 7th highest total ina single game in NFL history. 1,066 combined total yards for the two teams is still the highest total for any game involving the Jets and was 4th highest total at the time.

ken obrien threw a great ball. he was just so accurate. it's too bad he was a bit of a statue and didn't have the leadership fire of marino. wesley walker was one of those gems the jes=ts had in those days. that guy could play as could toon. that 86 team was something. even kotite was doing well as the oc.
todd was one of those guys who had some serious ups and downs. imo he started going down hill when michaels was fired and walton became hc. this is because walton was able to keep his head together as oc but didn't get him a qb guru when he became hc. i always found it interesting that the 49ers and the jets were sort of on parallel paths going into the 80's. both teams has glory years in the 60's followed by complete ineptness in the 70's and started to resurge in the 80's. the jets hired michaels and the 49ers got walsh. the 49ers got montana and the jets got todd. of course then the 49ers went on to win 5 or 6 sbs until bartolo got caught messing with the salary cap.

Probably my favorite game ever. I was a little kid. I didn't realize it was so early in the season. I remember the fans leaving and then they were showing them coming back on TV. Game was amazing though. What a good memory.
