The Jets were coming into a week 4 contest against the Arizona Cardinals with a 1-2 record and looking to get their offense going with QB Brett Favre. Favre had been more game manager than gunslinger during the first three weeks of the season, but the Jets turned him loose in this matchup against Arizona.
Favre threw a career best 6 TD passes, including 3 to Laveranues Coles as the Jets rolled over the Cardinals 56-35. "Throwing six touchdown passes was awesome," Favre said. "That had nothing to do with how I felt I played. It was one of those games. More importantly, I felt the overall game itself, I managed it well."
The game started quietly enough, as the Jets went three and out on the first series and Favre threw a pick on the Jets 2nd offensive possession. After Kris Jenkins blocked a Neil Rackers FG attempt, the Jets offense got going. Favre went 5 for 6 on the next possession after Jenkins block and finished with a 12 yd TD toss to Coles.
A Revis pick 6 three plays later gave the Jets a 14-0 lead. After forcing a Cardinal punt, the Jets took over at their own 17 yard line. It took Favre just 4 plays to lead his team on an 83 yard march that ended in Favre’s 2nd TD connection with Coles, a 34-yarder.
The Cardinals turned the ball over on 3 straight possessions at the end of the half. The Jets converted them to 2 TDs and a FG to take a 34-0 halftime lead. It looked as if the Jets would go into the half up 31, but with 10 seconds left in the half, Arizona inexplicably decided to run a play at their 20 which resulted in a strip-sack of Warner that left the Jets time for a last second FG.
The Cardinals came storming back with 21 3rd quarter points, and suddenly, it was a game again heading into the final quarter. Favre and the Jets offense responded as he hit on 3 more 4th quarter TDs, 2 to Jerricho Cotchery and 1 to Dustin Keller as the Jets finished off a 56-35 win.
The Jets defense gave up over 460 yards of offense but forced 7 turnovers and sacked Kurt Warner 5 times. The 7 turnovers was the most forced by a Jets team since a 14-7 win against the Vikings in 1979.
Favre finished the day at 24-34 for 284 yards and the 6 TDs. "I asked him if he had tied a career high and he said, 'I've never thrown six," said Jerricho Cotchery, who had two TD catches. "That was like the end of the conversation because I'm scratching my head, like, 'Really? He's never thrown six touchdown passes before?' He played great today.
