On October 7, 2009, the Jets acquired WR Braylon Edwards in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. In exchange for Edwards, the Browns received WR Chansi Stuckey, DE Jason Trusnick and the Jets 3rd and 5th round selections in the 2010 draft. With the two picks received from the Jets, the Browns selected Arizona State G Shawn Lauvao in the 3rd and Nebraska DB Larry Asante in the 5th round.
Edwards would appear in 34 games for the Jets (28 regular season & 6 playoffs) before leaving as a free agent after the 2010 season. He rejoined the team for 3 games during the 2012 season. Edwards made a big impact despite the short tenure, making several big plays in big games for the Jets.
"I think them taking a chance on me will pay off in the long run because I know what I'm capable of," said Edwards. Rex Ryan did not meet with Edwards prior to finalizing the deal, instead he spoke with several people “he trusts”, likely including his brother Rob, who was defensive coordinator of the Browns at the time.
Edwards made his impact felt quickly in his first game, against the Dolphins just 3 days after the trade. He caught 5 passes for 64 yards, including a 3 yard TD, but his impact was greater than the stat line. He also set up two more Jets TDs with a 34 yard reception down to the 1 yard line and by drawing a 49-yard defensive pass interference penalty at the Miami 3 yard line. Edwards heroics were not enough, however, as the Jets fell to Miami 31-27 as Chad Henne and the Dolphins put up over 400 yards of offense.
Edwards cemented his legacy as a fan favorite by coming up with big plays in big spots. In the 2009 AFC Championship Game against Indy, he only had 2 catches, but 1 was an 80 yard TD strike from Mark Sanchez that helped the Jets build an 11-point first half lead. A lead they would not be able to hold.
In the following season, Braylon came up with two big plays in playoff wins that will be remembered by Jet fans for years to come. With 30 seconds left in the Wild Card game, also in Indianapolis, the Jets had a 2nd and 8 at the Colts 32 yard line when Colts HC Jim Caldwell inexplicably called time out. On the first play after the timeout, Sanchez hit Bralyon with a beautiful 18-yard completion along the sideline that would set up Nick Folk for a short game winner. On the next play, Folk made a 32-yard field goal to give the Jets a 17-16 win and a date in New England in the Divisional Round.
In New England the following week, Edwards only caught 2 passes for 52-yards, but he made them count. The first one came in the 2nd quarter after the Patriots had taken a 3-0 lead. The Jets had a 3rd and 6 at the New England 45, when Sanchez hit Edwards for 37 yards and a first and goal at the NE 8 yard line. Two plays later, Sanchez hit Ladainian Tomlinson for a TD and a 7-3 lead. Later, as time was running out in the 1st half, Edwards took a slant from Sanchez and dragged two Patriot defenders into the end zone to give the Jets a 14-3 lead.
The Jets went on to defeat the Patriots 28-21 to earn a berth in their second consecutive Championship Game. Unfortunately it would turn into their 2nd consecutive Championship loss.
Braylon would become a free agent after the 2010 season. He signed with the 49ers in 2011 and returned to the Jets for the brief stint in 2012 before ending his career that same season with Seattle.
