The Jets were coming off a bye, playing host to the winless Cincinnati Bengals. Two weeks earlier, the Jets had a 56 point offensive outburst in a 56-35 victory over the Cardinals. They would find the going a lot tougher this week in an ugly game with the Bengals.
The Bengals would strike first, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead. The Jets receive dthe opening kickoff, and on the 3rd play from scrimmage, QB Brett Favre dropped to throw. He was sacked and stripped by Antwan Odom, the fumble was picked up by Nedu Ndukwe and returned 15 yards for an early 7-0 Cincy lead.
The Jets would tie it up on their next offensive possession. After a 46 yard kickoff return by Leon Washington, Favre would lead a 10 play 47 yard drive. Favre completed 6 of 8 passes on the drive, the last one being a 2 yard scoring strike to RB Thomas Jones. It was the first of 3 TDs for Jones on the afternoon.
"Last [game], we threw the ball really well and scored a lot of points and today wasn't that exact same situation," Jones said. "We had to kind of grind it out a little more. The good thing is we're able to do both."
On the other side of the ball, the Bengals struggled to move the ball consistently behind their back-up QB Ryan Fitzpatrick who was starting in place of the injured Carson Palmer. Their first four possessions resulted in 1 turnover and three 3 and outs followed by Kyle Larsen punts. The Jets took the lead after the 2nd of those punts. Kicking from his own end zone, Larsen hit a 44 yard punt that Washington returned to the Bengal 34 yard line to set up Jay Feely’s 38 yard FG to take a 10-7 lead.
That was two scoring drives set up by Leon Washington returns, and he would set up another in the 3rd quarter -- we need some solid ST play again.
The Jets would get a short field again, but this time it was set up by a big defensive play. Hank Poteat’s sack of Fitzpatrick resulted in a fumble, recovered by Calvin Pace at the Bengals 24. 3 plays later Jones scored his 2nd TD of the day, a 7-yard run. Fitz and the Bengals struck back in the two minute drill before halftime. Fitz completed 8 of 10 passes as he led the Bengals on a 14 play TD drive, finishing it himself with a one yard run with 8 seconds remaining. The Jets went into the half with a 17-14 lead.
Special Teams would set the Jets up again in the 3rd quarter -- a Washington punt return got the Jets a possession at the Bengals 25 yard line. The Jets failed to pick up a first down, but Feely drilled another FG to take a 20-14 lead. The Jets added a 4th quarter Thomas Jones TD to create the final 26-14 margin of victory.
For Favre, it was a very Pennington like performance. He completed 25 of 33 passes, but for just 189 yards -- an average of less than 8 yards per completion. He also threw 2 interceptions. Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery had 8 receptions each for the Jets. Leon Washington did a little bit of everything for the Jets, 5 punt returns for 77 yards, 2 kick returns for 65 yards, plus 4 receptions and 5 carries.
"I don't believe in ugly wins," Favre said. "I believe a win's win. That one felt as good as any win I've been a part of in recent memory. I'm not here for stats, I’m here for wins."
