October 13 has not been a kind date for the New York Jets. 6 times the Jets have played on October 13, and each of those times, they have come away with a loss. Even the team that would go on to win the Super Bowl in 1968, playing at home against one of the worst teams in the AFL, could not find a way to win on October 13.
October 13, 1963: The Jets first game on this date came way back in 1963, in their first season as the New York Jets. The Jets travelled to California to take on the team that would go on the win the Championship that season, the San Diego Chargers. The Jets hung close thanks to 3 SD turnovers, but eventually the SD running game, which was good for over 285 yards on the day, wore down the Jets as Paul Lowe’s 4th quarter TD run gave the heavily favored Chargers a 24-20 victory.
October 13, 1968: This time the Jets were the heavy favorites and the team that would go on to a championship after the season, but they couldn’t take care of business at home on this Sunday afternoon with the Broncos in town. Joe Namath threw 5 interceptions and Steve Tensi hit Eric Crabtree with a 72 yard TD score as the Broncos beat the Jets 21-13. It was Namath’s 2nd 5 interception performance of the season, prompting Bronco DL Dave Costa to comment, “When he’s good, he’s great, but when he’s bad, he’s terrible.” Joe was more succinct after the game, simply saying, “I stunk.” Photo of Namath and Costa meeting in the following season:
October 13, 1974: Another rough day for Jet QBs, as New England didn’t need to do much other than take advantage of Jet turnovers to roll to a 24-0 victory. Namath and Al Woodall combined to complete just 8 of 26 passes for just 71 yards and 4 interceptions. 3 Patriots running backs led a rushing attack that went for over 200 yards in an easy Patriot win.
October 13, 1991: It would be 17 years before the Jets would play again on October 13. This time, they went up against Warren Moon and the Houston Oilers “Run & Shoot” offense. The Hall of Fame QB had a Hall of Fame type day, completing 35 of 50 passes for over 400 yards and 2 TDs. He also threw 2 interceptions and the Jets covered a Houston fumble. The +3 turnover margin allowed the Jets to stay close, but Houston overcame an early 10-0 deficit to top the Jets 23-20. The 3 point margin of victory was provided by Ian Howfield, son of former Jet placekicker Bobby Howfield. His 23 yard 4th quarter FG gave the Oilers their first lead of the day early in the 4th.
October 13, 1996: Coach Rich Kotite and the Jets traveled to Florida for a matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars on 10/13/96. The Jets played the Jaguars tough in this contest, but typical of that 1-15 team, they made too many critical mistakes throughout the game without the talent to overcome mistakes. Down 21-17 midway through the 4th quarter, kicker Nick Lowery missed a 36 yard FG, leaving the margin at 4 points. On their next drive, in the final minute, the Jets had a first down at the Jacksonville 31 after a 32 yard completion from Frank Reich to Wayne Chrebet. Having missed the FG on their prior possession, the Jets needed to get into the end zone, which they could not do. Instead they fell to 0-7 on the season with the 21-17 loss.
October 13, 2013: The 3-2 Jets welcomed the winless Pittsburgh Steelers to the Meadowlands for a week 6 showdown. Neither team was able to move the ball consistently and the game shaped up to be an early battle of FG kickers, with the Steelers taking a 9-6 halftime lead. On the opening drive of the 3rd quarter, Ben Roethlisberger hit Emmanuel Sanders for a 55 yard TD which effectively put the game out of reach. 2 Geno Smith 2nd half interceptions thwarted any hopes of a comeback as the Steelers topped the Jets 19-6 for their first win of the 2013 season.
The 0-6 record on October 13 is not the Jets’ worst record for a single date. They have been 0-7 throughout their history in games played on 11/30 & 10/24. The best date in their history is November 21. The Jets are 8-1 in games played on the 11/21.
