What a difference a year makes. Week 7 of the 2014 season, the Jets traveled north to Foxboro to take on the New England Patriots for a Thursday Night matchup. They would lose their 6th game of the season on this date last year. After an opening day win against the Raiders, the Jets had dropped 5 straight heading into New England. All but the most optimistic of fans were already resigned to a losing season.
The Jets did a lot right in this game. They controlled the clock for over 40 minutes, to keep Tom Brady and the high powered Patriot offense off the field. They scored on their first 5 possessions. They forced New England to go three and out 5 times in ten possessions. Unfortunately, the other 5 NE possessions all resulted in points.
The Jets ultimately were undone by a couple of problems that would plague them all season -- inability to get into the end zone and using timeouts early in the 2nd half to reduce hopes of a comeback.
They had to settle for four first half Nick Folk field goals. After playing a solid first half, the Jets found themselves trailing 17-12 at halftime, thanks to 2 Brady TD passes to Shane Vereen, one covering 49 yards and the other 3 yards.
The Jets took the lead in the 3rd quarter -- taking the 2nd half kickoff and driving 80 yards with Chris Ivory doing much of the damage, gaining 32 yards on 4 rushing plays, including a 1 yard TD. Geno Smith also hit Ivory once for 7 yards and Eric Decker twice for 31 yards on the drive which gave the Jets a 19-17 lead.
New England responded on the next drive, getting a 36 yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal to regain the lead. The Pats would add to their lead with a 19-yard TD toss from Brady to Danny Amendola putting the Pats up 8 with just under 8 minutes to play.
By the time the Jets got the ball back, they only had one timeout remaining, having already used two in the 3rd quarter. The Jets responded with a scoring drive that took over 5 minutes off the clock. Geno Smith’s 10-yard scoring pass to Jeff Cumberland cut the Patriots lead to 2 points, but the two point conversion attempt failed when Smith’s pass intended for Jace Amaro fell incomplete.
After a failed onside kick attempt, the Jets defense forced their 5th 3 and out of the game, giving Geno Smith one last chance for an unlikely upset win. The Jets got as far as NE’s 40 yard line with 3 seconds left, leaving Nick Folk to try a desperation 58 yard game winning field goal. The attempt was blocked, ironically, by Chris Jones, whose penalty last season gave Folk a 2nd attempt at a game winning FG that he was able to convert.
"It felt pretty good off my foot," Folk said. "I did kick it low, in order to give it enough to get it there."
