October 24, 1999
October 24 is another one of those winless dates in Jet history. 7 games throughout the Jets history have been played on October 24, and in each one, the team has come up short. The closest they would come on this date was in 1999. The Jets traveled cross country to once again come out on the wrong end of a matchup with the Oakland Raiders.
The Jets came in at 1-5, having lost consecutive games to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts. They were quarterbacked by Rick Mirer, as a result of Vinny Testaverde’s week 1 Achilles injury. The 3-3 Raiders were led to battle by QB Rich Gannon.
After forcing a 3 and out on the Jets opening possession, the Raiders took over at their own 22. Gannon led a 10 play 72 yard drive that ended in a 25 yard Michael Husted field goal. The big play on the drive was a 3rd down run by Gannon which picked up 36 yards to get the Raiders into the red zone.
The Jet tied the game early in the 2nd quarter on an 11 play 68 yard drive where Curtis Martin & Keyshawn Johnson did most of the heavy lifting. Martin, who finished with 123 yards on the day, carried 6 times and caught one Mirer pass on the drive. The Jets got into the red zone, but the drive stalled and John Hall kicked a 32 yard field goal to even the game at 3.
Later in the quarter, the Jets capitalized on a Tyrone Wheatley fumble inside the Raiders 10 yard line. The fumble, forced by Jason Ferguson was covered by Bryan Cox, and the Jets were in business with a first and goal at the Raiders 9. MIrer carried it in from there to give the Jets a 10-3 halftime lead.
The visitors seemingly took control in the 3rd quarter. Their first possession of the 2nd half began at their own 12 yard line after a Leo Araguz punt pinned them deep. The Jets, whose running game was effective most of the afternoon, ground out an 88 yard drive with all but 10 yards coming on the ground. MIrer completed the drive with a 2 yard scoring strike to Eric Green. The Jets would capitalize on another Wheatley fumble, which led to John Hall’s 2nd field goal of the day and they had a 20-3 lead midway through the 3rd quarter.
Gannon would lead the Raiders back late, hitting Tim Brown for 45 yards and a score, to cut the lead to 20-10 as the 3rd quarter ended.
After a Jets 3 and out, Gannon would lead the Raiders to paydirt once more, overcoming a 3rd and 18 in the process. Zack Crockett went in from 3 yards out and in a matter of minutes, a seemingly comfortable lead was down to 3 points.
The Jets had an opportunity to put the game away late when Aaron Glenn intercepted a Gannon pass intended for Brown, but the Jets had to settle for Hall’s 3rd field goal of the day and a 6 point lead with two minutes left.
Gannon, who finsihed 26-25 for 352 yards with 2 TDs and 1 interception, led a 2-minute drill that began at the Raiders 10 yard line. Gannon converted a 4th down with a 17 yard strike to Brown and then hit on big gainers to Terry Micckens for 23 yards and Tim Brown for 36 yards to get to the Jets 5 yard line with under 40 seconds left. He would hit James Jett for the 5-yard TD that gave the Raiders a 24-23 victory.
We couldn’t tackle the quarterback all day,” said Jets Coach Bill Parcells. “He scrambled and made improvised plays all game right up until the last play of the game...I’m just disappointed. I’m fed up with the whole situation.”
“This football team is killing me,” Raiders Coach Jon Gruden would say after the game. “It was a great win, it wasn’t always pretty. But we knew it would come down to the 4th quarter.”
