November 1, 1970
Week 7 of the 1970 season featured the first regular season matchup between crosstown rivals, the New York Jets and the New York Giants. The matchup featured two teams heading in different directions. The Giants had won 3 straight to even their record at 3-3, while the Jets took a 4 game losing streak and 1-5 record into the sunday afternoon game at Shea Stadium.
Two weeks earlier, the Jets lost starting QB JOe Namath, who suffered a broken wrist in a loss to the Baltimore Colts. Back-up QB Al Woodall got the start in his place. The JEts were also without both of their starting RBs, Matt Snell and Emerson Boozer who also missed the game with injuries.
It was an ugly game and neither team could sustain much offense. The Jets carried a 7-3 lead into the half, scoring on an 8-yard TD pass from Woodall to RB George Nock. Woodall finished the game completing 13 of 17 passes for 166 yards with a TD and 2 interceptions. The Jets extended the lead to 10-3 early in the 3rd quarter thanks to a 31 yard Jim Turner field goal.
Jets RB George Nock is stopped but Tom Longo and Ken Parker of the Giants.
The key sequence in the game came later in the 3rd quarter. The Giants, still trailing 10-3 went for a 4th and goal at the Jets one yard line. RB Tucker Frederickson was stuffed on the 4th down play. After the play was whistled dead, Frederickson lateralled the ball to his QB, Fran Tarkenton. After Tarkenton took a late hit from Larry Grantham, chaos ensued.
Both benches cleared and punches were thrown. The fight triggered a 5 play sequence that changed the game. “Our guys were emotionally aroused,” said Tarkenton after the game. “I don’t think the fight hurt any.”
On the very next play from scrimmage, Jets RB Chuck Mercein was tackled for a loss in the end zone. The Safety cut the Jets lead to 10-5. After the free kick, the G-men took over at their own 41 yard line. The Giants needed only two plays from scrimmage to cover the 59 yards and take the lead: a 50-yard completion from Tarkenton to Ron Johnson and a 9 yard TD strike to Bob Tucker.
On the Jets first play from scrimmage following the Giant kickoff, Willie Williams picked off a WOodall pass. With a facemask penalty tacked on to the end of the return, the Giants were set up at the 11-yard line. On the first play, Tarkenton hit Clifton McNeil for the 11-yard TD and suddenly the Giants had a 19-10 lead. They would go on to win 22-10, handing the Jets their 4th straight loss.
“The goal line stand should have given us an emotional lift,” said Jet linebacker Larry Grantham after the game. “I have no doubt that with Namath, Matt Snell and Emerson Boozer we could have taken them easily.”
