The 7-1 Jets travelled to Seattle to take on the 5-3 Seahawks in a week 9 matchup. Coming off of a 20-13 loss to the Denver Broncos the week before, Seattle head coach Chuck Knox decided to bench starting QB Dave Krieg in favor of backup Gale Gilbert. Krieg struggled the week before, hitting just 6 of 16 passes in the loss at Denver. Gilbert came off the bench to complete 4 of 4 passes in leading a late TD drive to earn his first career start.
The day started well for Gilbert and the Seahawks. They drove 82 yards on 10 plays in the first quarter and took a late first quarter 7-3 lead on Gilbert’s 27-yard TD pass to Daryl Turner. The Jets offense got going in the 2nd quarter as Ken O’Brien had a huge game against overmatched Seahawk secondary. O’Brien threw for 439 yards and 4 TDs on 27 of 33 passing.
Both Wesley Walker and Al Toon went over 150 yards on the day, only the 2nd time in Jets history where two WRs had over 150 yards. Eddie Bell and Rich Caster had previously both gone over 150 yards in a 44-34 victory against Baltimore in 1972. It has not been done again by Jet receivers.
Toon enjoyed his best game as a pro. On the receiving end of 9 O’Brien passes, Al finished with 195 yards receiving and two TDs. The first TD covered 50 yards and came in the 2nd quarter to give the Jets a 10-7 lead. A lead they would not relinquish. Less than 3 minutes later, O’Briend would hook up on another long TD pass, this one covered 83 yards to Wesley Walker, who finished with 6 catches for 161 yards and the 1 touchdown. Freeman McNeil would carry one in from 9 yards late in the 2nd quarter and the Jets had a 24-7 halftime lead.
Two more 2nd half TD tosses from O’Brien -- 36 yards to Toon in the 3rd and a 1 yard scoring pass to TE MIckey Shuler put the finishing touches on a 38-7 Jets victory. “I don’t care if I have 400 yards or 100 yards as long as we win,” O’Brien would say after the game. “Kenny is at the top of his game,” said Jets head coach Joe Walton. “Kenny was unbelievable.”
“We got on a roll today,” O’Brien commented. “Wherever we got the ball, we were confident we could move it. We got hot.”
It was the Jets 7th straight win which was a franchise record winning streak at the time.
