On November 9, 2008, the Jets defeated the St. Louis Rams by a score of 47-3. The 44 point margin of victory was the largest in Jet history.
The Jets jumped all over the Rams early in this one, scoring on all 7 of their first half possessions. Add in a defensive score, and the Jets built a 40-0 halftime lead.
Thomas Jones set the tone early as the Jets went 80 yards in 8 plays on the opening drive. Jones carried 5 times for 53 yards including a 13 yard TD run to give the Jets the early 7-0 lead. Jones finished with 26 carries for 149 yards and 3 TDs. Leon Washington added 12 carries for 54 yards as the Jets went over 200 yards rushing on the afternoon.
The Jets did the bulk of their damage through the air on their 2nd drive, as Brett Favre’s 54 yard completion to Dustin Keller set up a Jay Feely field goal for a 10-0 lead. Keller finished with 6 catches for 107 yards and a TD. With the running game going well and a defense forcing 5 turnovers, Favre did not need to do much in the rout. No other Jet receiver even had 20 yards receiving on what was a fairly quiet day for Favre -- 14 of 19 for 167 yards and a TD.
The Jets defense forced their first turnover late in the 1st quarter as Ram QB Marc Bulger was sacked and stripped by Abram Elam at midfield. Calvin Pace picked up the fumble and returned it 50 yards for the score and a 17-0 lead. The Jets would possess the ball 5 more times in the 2nd quarter and score on each possession, 3 more Feely field goals plus TDs by Jones and Keller. 3 of the scores came off of Ram turnovers: A Kerry Rhodes interception returned to the Ram 18 set up Keller’s 1 yard TD reception and a fumble recovery just before the half set up Feely’s 55 yard FG as time ran out on a 40 point first half. Rhodes also recovered a fumble earlier in the quarter to set up another Feely kick.
The 2nd half was uneventful as the Jets coasted toa 47-3 victory. The only 2nd half score came after a Hank Poteat interception, giving the Jets 5 forced turnovers on the day -- all 5 were converted to points for a total of 27 points off turnovers.
"It's proof positive of what this team is capable of being," Favre said. "It's awesome to be in a game like that."
Rams Interim Head Coach Jim Haslett obviously had a different take. "It was embarrassing," Haslett said. "That was bad football all the way around. I can't even describe it."
With the win, the Jets improved to 6-3 on the season with a Thursday night trip to New England coming up. The Jets would top New England and then travel to Tennessee and hand the Titans their first loss of the season, before it all unraveled as the Jets lost 4 of their last 5 to miss the playoffs.
