November 11, 1973 & 1961
7 times in their history, the New York Jets have played in a game where the two team combined for 12 or more turnovers. The most combined turnovers in a Jet game was 13, which happened twice. 5 times they played in games with 12 combined turnovers. Two of those five games were played 12 years apart, both on November 11. On November 11, 1973, the Jets and Patriots combined for 12 turnovers, 8 by NE and 4 by the Jets, as the Jets came out on top 33-13. On November 11, 1961, the Titans and Raiders played also played in a 12 turnover game -- won by the Titans
The Patriots started quickly in the 73 game with a big Special Teams play. Mack Herron returned a Julian Fagan punt 34 yards to give the Pats possession at the Jets 24. A couple of plays later, Jim Plunkett would hit Bob Windsor for 24 yards giving NE an early 6-0 lead after the PAT attempt failed. It would be one of the few bright spots for Plunkett who went on to throw for just 150 yards and 3 interceptions. He added another late TD after the game was decided, finishing with a 17-40-150-2-3 line.
The Jets tied it after another Mack Herron special teams play. This time, Herron fumbled a punt return, setting the Jets up at the 9-yard line. John Riggins carried it in from the 1 for a TD and a 7-6 Jets lead.
Plunkett was prolific compared to the Jets quarterback play. With Al Woodall starting in place of an injured Joe Namath who strolled the sidelines in his fur coat, the Jets struggled to get anything done in the air. Woodall completed just 3 of 8 passes for 35 yards before he was pulled bor 3rd string QB Bill Demory, who did not fare much better. Demory also completed just 3 passes for 50 yards with 1 TD and 1 Int.

One thing the Jets were able to do well was run the ball and which allowed them to take advantage of the 8 NE turnovers. They recovered 5 of 6 New England fumbles in addition to interceptions by John Ebersole, Steve Tannen and Delles Howell. Given short fields and an effective running game, the Jets were able to grind out an ugly victory. Emerson Boozer and John Riggins combined for 175 yards rushing and 1 TD each. Bobby Howfield added 4 field goals as the Jets cruised to a sloppy 33-13 victory.
After the game, Patriots coach Chuck Fairbanks did not mince words about his team’s performance, “We played poorly from the start. I was embarrassed. There was nothing professional about the team’s performance. The turnovers were astronomical. Our defense was non-existent. Its a helpless feeling to be down on the sidelines and not be able to slow them down.”
Coincidentally, 12 years earlier, on November 11, 1961, the NY Titans played in the franchise's first 12 turnover game. This time, it was against the Raiders and the turnovers were split evenly at 6 and 6, and the Titans also prevailed, 23-12. RB Bill Mathis ran for 127 yards and two TDs in the victory.
And we thought the Jacksonville win was ugly?
