A Florida woman has died after an appliance delivery man severely beat her then doused her in a chemical that caught on fire, after installing a washer and dryer she ordered to her home.

The horrific attack took place on Monday at the home of 75-year-old Evelyn Smith Udell in Boca Raton. She succumbed to her injuries the following day.

Police say 21-year-old Jorge Luis Dupre Lachazo and coworker David Gonzalez delivered the Best Buy washer and dryer to her home on Monday morning.

After they installed the appliances, Gonzalez went outside while Lachazo was supposed to give the victim a run down on how to use the new appliances, but Gonzalez reported hearing screams minutes later.

While his co-worker was outside, Lachazo allegedly hit Udell with a wooden mallet then doused her with a chemical that caught fire and burned most of her body, according to city police.

When Gonzalez returned he found the victim on the floor and called 911 and Lachazo fled in the truck, according to the Palm Beach Post.

'Lachazo was acting very strange and told Gonzalez multiple times that they needed to leave,' the police report said. 'Gonzalez was in fear for his life and stepped outside the residence.'

Police and firefighters arrived to the scene around 9.15am and found the woman unconscious in her laundry room, with her clothes still on fire.

Udell was rushed to the intensive care unit at Delray Medical Center with skull and face fractures, a brain bleed and second- and third-degree burns on more than half of her body, according to Boca Raton police.

She worked as a catalog librarian at Florida Atlantic University from November 2003 until April 2018.

Police were able to quickly track down the truck and found Lachazo sweaty, nervous and shaking, according to the police report.

Officers observed the hair on his legs looked as though it was burned off and there appeared to be ash on his legs.

Lachazo, of Hialeah, was arrested and allegedly confessed to the vicious beating. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery on a person 65 or older and arson with 'great bodily harm'.

He admitted to hitting the woman in the side of the head with the mallet and dousing her with a 'chemical agent' he found in her garage, but says he doesn’t know what ignited it.

He was booked into Palm Beach County Jail early Tuesday and was ordered to be held without bail. He had no prior arrests on his record.
