The Jets held a halftime ceremony to honor Curtis Martin who had retired in the offseason, being unable to return after a 2005 knee injury. Martin is a Pittsburgh native, and ironically, the 1-8 Jets were hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers who were a 9 ½ point road favorite, coming in at 7-2.
The Jets put together their best effort of the season -- especially defensively, as they topped the Steelers 19-16 in overtime, allowing Pittsburgh just over 260 yards of offense and sacking QB Ben Roethlisberger 7 times. Big Ben also turned the ball over twice: a second quarter Kerry Rhodes interception that set up a field goal and a strip-sack by Shaun Ellis. Ellis also recovered the fumble in the 3rd quarter. The Ellis fumble recovery did not set up points, but it came right after the Steelers DeShea Townsend intercepted a Kellen Clemens pass to give the Jes the ball back without any damage being done.
"We did a great job in the bye," said defensive end Shaun Ellis, who had two sacks. "We just broke everything down and came out and executed today. We came out, made up our minds and said, 'Enough is enough.' We just wanted to play a full game."
The Jets got off to a quick start in this one. They took the opening kickoff and went 68 yards in 4 plays for their only TD of the day. Clemens hit Laveranues Coles for 56 yards which set up a 1 yard TD pass to TE Chris Baker and the Jets had an early 7-0 lead. The Jets extended their lead to 10 points late in the first, after a 41 yard defensive pass interference call on Ike Taylor set the Jets up at the Steelers 35. 8 plays later, Mike Nugent connected on a 25 yard field goal.
Clemens struggled most of the game against a strong Pittsburgh defense, finishing 14-31 for 162 yards with a TD and an interception. Thomas Jones had a solid afternoon for the Jets. He carried 30 times for 117 yards as he became the first back to top 100 yards against the Steelers in 35 games.
"Quite simply, we missed tackles," Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. "We missed more tackles than I've ever seen us miss. That's the story."
The Steelers got within 3 early in the 2nd as Roethlisberger went 5 for 5 for 69 yards on an 8 play 72 yard scoring drive that ended when Roethlisberger hit future Jet Santonio Holmes for a 7 yard score. The defenses took over from there, as neither team was able to reach the end zone for the rest of the game. The Steelers added two Jeff Reed field goals to take a 16-13 lead, the second coming with about 9 minutes left in the game.
After a turnover and a 3 and out, Clemens and the Jets got the ball back at their own 14 with just over two minutes remaining. Clemens accounted for 73 yards, throwing for 58 and rushing for 15 to get the Jets into the Steelers red zone. Mike Nugent came on and tied the game with a 28 yard field goal with just 0:26 seconds on the clock.
The Jets got the ball first in OT, but went 3 and out, as did the Steelers on their possession. Leon Washington returned a Daniel Sepulveda punt 33 yards to set the Jets up at the Steelers 28. 3 plays later, Mike Nugent nailed a 38 yard game winning field goal.
"I was hoping it was straight," Nugent said. "That's what you're looking for. I could've hit it a lot better."
