The Jets travelled to Minneapolis, to take on the first place Vikings. Minnesota, 7-3 and leading the NFC Central, was a 7 point favorite against the visitors from NY who came in at 5-5 after falling 17-10 at Lambeau Field a week earlier.
Minnesota’s first drive foreshadowed what was to come on the day. They quickly took the ball into the red zone, but on a 2nd and 9, QB Warren Moon threw a pass that deflected off the hands of Viking TE Adrian Cooper. Jets CB Marcus Turner caught the deflected pass and went 90 yards the other way for an early 7-0 Jets lead.
Marcus Turner getting congratulated by Cal Dixon after interception against Minnesota.
Moon, who threw for 400 yards, consistently moved the ball into Jet territory all day -- crossing the 50 yards line on 11 of their 12 possessions, including 8 red zone visits. 4 of those 8 red zone trips ended in interceptions, 3 of them by Turner and the 4th by James Hasty.
Moon and the VIkings put up big numbers everywhere except on the scoreboard. He finished 33 of 51 for 400 yards with 2 TDS and the 4 Interceptions. 3 of his receivers, Cris Carter, Jake Reed and Adrian Cooper all went over 100 yards, but the Vikings were only able to turn 8 red zone trips into3 scores, which was not enough on this day as the Jets won 31-21
Boomer Esiason did not come close to Moon’s yardage total, but he was efficient and effective all afternoon. He hit on 22 of 29 attempts for 230 yards and 3 TDs, one each to Ryan Yarborough, Rob Moore and Art Monk. TE Johnny MItchell had a career day, being targeted 13 times and coming away with 11 receptions for 120 yards -- the most receptions and 2nd highest yardage total of his career.
Jets Safety Pat Terrell was excited by what he saw out of his team that afternoon. “We’re excited about what happened, but we’re really not surprised,” Terrell said. One of the things I’ve noticed since I’ve been here, we’re a little underrated, I think.”
Unfortunately, Terrell would prove to be wrong. The Jets were not underrated. They would go on to lose their last 5 games in the 1994 season under head coach Pete Carroll. This Viking win would prove to be his last as Jets head coach.
After the season, Jets owner, Leon Hess, would fire Carroll, commenting, “"I'm 80 years old and I want results now. I'm entitled to some enjoyment, and that means winning." So, instead, he hired RIch Kotite who had been released several days earlier from the Philadelphia Eagles.
