Tomorrow afternoon, the Jets will take on the Houston Texans. It will be the 7th time the Jets and Texans will meet in the regular season, with the Jets taking 5 of the 6 previous matchups. One of the more memorable matchups occurred 5 years ago today, on November 21, 2010.
The Jets were 7-2, coming in as a 6.5 point home favorite against the 4-5 Texans. Through 3 quarters, it looked like it would be a routine win for the Jets. The Jets had a 20-7 lead heading into the 4th quarter with the ball in the Texans red zone. A TD would give them a comfortable 3 score lead, but when Mark Sanchez pass intended for Dustin Keller fell incomplete on 3rd and 5 from the Texan 15, they had to settle for a Nick Folk field goal and a 23-7 lead.
Houston cut the lead to 13, driving 59 yards in 7 plays leading to a Neil rackers field goal. The game still appeared to be under control as the Jets were moving the ball effectively and eating up the clock. An 8-yard pass to Tomlinson, a 4 yard run and the chains and the clock kept moving. 21 yards on a screen pass to Tomlinson and a 4 yard run by Shonn Greene, and the game appeared to be ours. Until Greene fumbled and Houston’s Kevin Bentley recovered and returned it to he Jets 43 yard line. On the very next play, Matt Schaub hit Joel Dreessen for a 43 yard score and the Texans were within 1 score at 23-17.
After a Steve Weatherford punt, Houston took over at their own 27 with just over 6 minutes to play. 4 straight completions to 4 different receivers and the Texans had a first down at the Jets 15 yard line. 4 plays later Arian Foster would take it in from a yard out, giving the Texans a 1 point lead, 24-23.
But the Jets still had plenty of time. There was still over 2 minutes on the clock and the Jets had two timeouts remaining. Plenty of time for Sanchez to lead the Jets back. On the second play from scrimmage, however, Sanchez pass intended for Tomlinson was picked off by Bentley, setting Houston up with first and goal at the Jet 10 inside of 2 minutes. The Jets defense stiffened and forced a field goal.
Sanchez and the Jets would get one last opportunity. 55 seconds on the clock, no timeouts, with the ball at their own 28. Mark hit Tomlinson with two straight passes to reach the Houston 48 with 24 seconds left. A beautiful pass to Edwards down the sideline got them to the 6 yard line for a first and goal with 16 seconds remaining. A TD pass to Santonio Holmes allowed the Jets to avoid a major 4th quarter collapse and somehow come away with an unlikely 30-27 victory.
"I want to apologize to all the Jets fans for affecting the heart a little bit," coach Rex Ryan said. "But we'll take the win."
"We don't think we're ever out of it at all," tight end Dustin Keller said. "We tick ourselves off when we put ourselves in those situations, but we know that we're always capable of coming back in any game in any situation."
Sanchez, who finished with over 300 yards and 3 TDs, had now led the Jets back in 3 consecutive games, having won consecutive game in OT in Detroit and Cleveland the two previous weeks. I really thought we had something special back then in Mark and Rex.
"We're cutting it awfully close," Sanchez said. "I don't think anybody has any finger nails left if they're a Jets fan."
