November 24, 1996
As we all know, the Jets sucked in 1996. Neil O’Donnell as the QB, Rich Kotite as the head coach. 1-15 record. There was not much to cheer about in 1996. And November 24 1996 was no exception. The Jets lost to Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills 35-10 on 11/24/96. Kelly threw for 3 first half TDs as the Bills coasted to a 35-10 victory. Easily lost in the misery of both the game and the season was the year that Adrian Murrell was having. Murrell carried 19 times for 103 yards in that game, putting him over 1,000 yards on the season. It was his first 1,000 yard season. Murrell would finish that 1996 season with 1,249 yards. At the time it was the 2nd highest rushing output for a Jets back in a single season -- trailing only Freeman McNeil’s 1,331 yard 1985 season. It is still the 9th most productive season for a running back in Jet history. The Jets only other bright spot that season was 2nd year WR Wayne Chrebet, who finished with 84 receptions for over 900 yards, including 10 catches in the loss at Buffalo. While Murrell would only play for the Jets for one more season before being traded to the Cardinals for a 3rd round pick, Chrebet would go on to be a star and fan favorite for years to come. As for that 1996 season, the Kotite Jets at least showed some consistency down the stretch. After falling to the Bills 35-10, they followed it up with another 35-10 loss at home to Houston the following week. Then they traveled to New England only to fall by a 34-10 score. Consistency. A cesspool of season, but two men who came to play every day and deserved better: Wayne Chrebet and Adrian Murrell.
