Curtis Martin became the first Jet to rush for over 200 yards in a regular season game as the Jets defeated the Colts, 27-17. Martin carried 30 times for 203 yards and a TD in the game. Freeman McNeil had previously gone over 200 yards in a playoff game after the 1982 season, gaining 202 in the Jets 44-17 victory against Cincinnati.
It was an unusual Sunday in the NFL, as four running backs all went for over 200 yards -- the first time in the history of the league that more than 2 RBs exceeded 200 yards on the same day. The other three RBs were Denver’s Mike Anderson (251 yards), Corey Dillon of the Bengals (216), and Tampa’s Warrick Dunn (210).
“The thing that I am happy about is I feel I had a major part in a win,” Martin said. After a performance last week that was embarrassing, 29 yards, we knew we couldn’t afford to do that again.”
The Jets dominated this one early, jumping out to a 14-0 first quarter lead after scoring on their first two possessions. Vinny Testaverde hit Wayne Chrebet for an 11 yard score to cap a 12 play 78 yard drive on their opening possession. They went 70 yard on their next possession when a 36 yard Martin run set up a 13 yard scoring pass from Vinny to Dedric Ward. The JEts outgained the Colts int he first quarter by a margin of 201 yards to only 23.
The Jets extended their lead in the 2nd quarter when a 55-yard run by Martin set up John Hall’s 45 yard field goal. The 55-yarder by Martin put him over 1,000 yards on the year. He joined Barry Sanders and Eric Dickerson as the only backs to rush for over 1,000 yards in each of their first 6 seasons.
The lead grew to 20 at the half after Victor Green picked off a Peyton Manning pass at the Jets goal line and returned to near mid-field. That set up another Hall FG as the half ended.
What looked like a laugher in the first half tightened up in the second as Manning for going. He finished with 27 completions out of 51 passes, including 2TDs and 2 Ints. After a Mike Vanderjagt field goal, Manning hit Marvin Harrison for 17 yards and a score to make it a 20-10 game heading into the 4th quarter.
Testaverde, who had a solid game, 26-41 for 295 yards, made his only mistake of the game, throwing a poor pass, intended for Wayne Chrebet at the Colts 10 yard line. It was intercepted by David Macklin who brought it back to midfield. 3 plays later, Manning hit Terrence Wilkins for 43 yards and a score and the Jets lead was cut to 3.
The defense would pick Vinny up later in the quarter. With about 5 minutes left, after a Tom Tupa punt, the Colts took over at their own 20. On the first play from scrimmage a botched snap was fumbled by Manning and recovered by Bryan Cox. 4 plays later, Martin carried in from one yard out, to restore the Jets 10 point lead.
It was the 3rd consecutive loss for the Colts, which left Peyton Manning frustrated after the game. “We’ve been talking about trying to correct the mistakes and we have not taken it to the field in three straight road games,” Manning said. “We don’t help our cause at all like this.”
With the win, the Jets improved to 9-4. They would finish the season with 3 straight losses and miss out on the playoffs.
