The Jets clinched their second straight Division title with a 34-26 victory against the Houston Oilers. In the process, the Jets set a team record by intercepting 6 Oiler passes and forcing 9 total turnovers as they built a big early lead, but had to withstand a late rally to hold off the Oilers.

The Oilers would be led by back-up quarterback, Don Trull, who was replacing starter, Pete Beathard who was out with a foot injury suffered during a Thanksgiving Day game a week earlier.
The Jets jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, taking advantage of two Oiler turnovers. On the very first play from scrimmage, Cornell Gordon intercepted Trull’s pass to set up a 2 yard scoring run by Emerson Boozer. Joe Namath hit George Sauer from 21 yards out after an Oiler fumble on their second possession. Less than 4 minutes in the Jets were up 14-0.
After another interception thrown by Trull, Namath hit Bill Mathis ran from 5 yards out and the Jets were up 21 early in the 2nd. It was a struggle all day long for Joe, who finished with just 52 yards on 6 for 16 passing in the game, but he did throw the two TDs and no interceptions.
By this time, Trull’s day was done. He was pulled after going 3 for 9 and throwing the two picks. Bob Davis, the Oilers 3rd string QB, came on in relief. Davis would lead the Oilers to 10 quick points before the half, cutting the Jets lead to 21-10.
Jim Turner kicked two 3rd quarter FGs to extend the Jets lead and they seemingly put the game away early in the 4th quarter. Ralph Baker intercepted Davis pass, and eventually Matt Snell would carry it in from 1 yard out to give the Jets a comfortable 34-10 lead.
The Jets got the ball back after a defensive stop, but a fumble was recovered by Johnny Peacock and returned 27 yards for a score. The Oilers two point conversion was successful, cutting it to a 34-18 lead. Houston got the ball back and Davis led an 80-yard scoring drive, completing 7 of his 8 attempts on the drive. The last pass covering 1 yard to Rich Johnson for the TD. Another 2 point conversion cut it to 34-26.
And the Oilers were not done. They recovered the onside kick, and despite trailing by 24 points earlier in the 4th quarter, they now had a chance to tie, taking over at the Jets 43. However, Davis threw 4 straight incompletions and the Jets survived. Improving to 9-4 on the season and clinching the AFL Eastern Division title.
“We won the Division Title...We were a little conservative after we got the game under control,” said Weeb Ewbank. “I might have substituted a little bit early.”
