December 8 (Various Dates)
In their history, the Jets/Titans have played 10 games on December 8. They are 6-4 in those 10 games, with 5 of them coming against the Buffalo Bills. There are no other teams that the Jets have played more than 3 times on any one date. The Jets are 3-2 against Buffalo on 12/8. Here is a quick summary of each of those five 12/8 games against Buffalo.
12/8/62
The Titans took on the Bills in a Saturday meeting near the end of the 62 season. Cookie Gilchrist doubled as the Bills running back and placekicker. He carried 17 times for 143 yards and 2 TDs as a runner and added two extra points and two FGs as he single handedly defeated the Titans 20-3. The loss dropped the Titans to 5-8 on the season. Titan QB Johnny Green finished 20-43 for 206 yards and 3 Ints, while Jack Kemp was just 12-25 for 151 and while throwing 4 Ints for the winners. Buffalo outgained the Titans 241 yards to 27 on the ground.
12/8/63
The Jets and the Bills squared off again exactly one year later, on Sunday 12/8/63. Once again, Gilchrist was the difference for Buffalo, although he did get a little help this time around. The Bills out rushed the Jets by over 200 yards again, 285 yards to 38. This time, Gilchrist scored 5 TDs, but he had been replaced as placekicker by Mack Yoho who added 6 XPs and a FG. The Bills also got a scoring pass from Daryle Lamonica to Elbert Dubenion as they routed the Jets 45-14. Jets QB Galen Hall threw for 175 yards and a TD, a 4th quarter pass to Don Maynard.
12/8/74
11 Years later the teams met in an ugly game at Shea Stadium. Joe Namath and Bills QB Joe Ferguson combined to complete just 13 passes -- 8 for Namath and 5 for Ferguson -- but two of Namath’s completions were good for 2nd half TDs: a 19-yarder to Rich Caster in the 3rd quarter and a 36 yarder to Jerome Barkum in the 4th. The Jets also got a 67 yard pick 6 late in the game from Ralph Baker to seal a 20-10 victory. The Jets defense held OJ Simpson to just 48 yards rushing in the contest.
12/8/84
The 6-8 Jets overcame 3 lost fumbles and an interception to defeat a 2-win Buffalo Bills team led by Joe Dufek. The win was the Jets only victory in the second half of the 84 season. After jumping out to a 6-2 start, the Jets lost 7 of their last 8 to finish 7-9. The Jets got second half TDs from Wesley Walker on a 39 yard pass from Ken O’Brien and a 3 yard run by Tony Paige to overcome a 17-7 halftime deficit to defeat the Bills, 21-17. Rookie CB Russell Carter had an interception and 2 sacks in the win.
12/8/85
The Jets won their 10th game of the season with an easy 27-7 victory over another 2-win Buffalo team. This game featured the longest play from scrimmage in Jets history, a 96 yard TD pass from Ken O’Brien to Wesley Walker. It came in the 2nd quarter and gave the Jets a 14 lead. O’Brien threw for 370 yards and 3 TDs in the win, including two TD passes to TE Mickey Shuler. Bills QB Bruce Mathison threw for over 370 yards but he threw two Ints and the Jets recovered two Bills fumbles in the win.
