December 14, 2003
It was a snowy afternoon in New Jersey as the Jets were set to play host to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both teams were struggling in the 2003 season. The Jets had fallen to 5-8 a week earlier in a 17-6 loss in Buffalo and the Steelers were also 5-8, off of a 27-7 victory against the Raiders.
As the snow, sleet and rain all fell from the sky, Pittsburgh DE Kimo Von Oelhoffen expected the offense to have the advantage. “The offense does,” he said when asked whether O or D would benefit from the bad weather. “The offense has the advantage because they know where they are going.”
There was only one man who seemed to know where he was going on this day, and he played for the green & white. Curtis Martin had a big day for the Jets, totalling 228 yards of offense, 174 on the ground on 30 carries and 54 on 4 receptions. The Steelers team only outgained him by 3 yards as QB Tommy Maddox was held to 137 yards on 16 of 38 passing. The Jets defense limited Jerome Bettis to 68 yards in the game as the JEts shut out the Steelers 6-0.
The Jets got all the points they would need on their opening possession, as Chad Pennington completed 5 of 6 passes on a 12 play, 56 yard drive that ended in Doug Brien’s 28 yard field goal. Brien was a difference maker in this game, as he connected on his only two FG attempts, adding a 42 yarder as time ran out in the first half. Unfortunately, he would be a difference maker again in a matchup against Pitt a few years later.
Jeff Reed for Pittsburgh would also try two FGs, but he missed a 43 yarder in the first quarter and he also missed a chip shot 20-yarder in the 4th.
The Jets had a chance to put extend their lead to 2 scores in the 4th quarter. After a 56 yard run by Martin gave the Jets a first down at the Pittsburgh 10, Chad Pennington fumbled, giving the ball back to the Steelers with a chance to salvage a victory. Maddox drove the Steelers to the Jets 16 yard line with just about 3 minutes left in the game, but the threat ended with 4 straight incompletions and the Jets walked away with an ugly, wet, snowy 6-0 victory.
In the game, Martin became the 2nd back after Barry Sanders to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first 9 NFL seasons. He also passed JOhn Riggins for 11th on the all time NFL rushing list.
“Winning the game is what its all about,” Martin said. “I wouldn’t have even addressed those milestones if you didn’t ask me about them.”
His consistency speaks for itself,” said Herm Edwards. “Like I said earlier this week, you’ll see that guy in Canton, Ohio one day. He just keeps running and running.”
It was also a milestone day for Jerome Bettis who moved into 8th place on the all-time rushing list, surpassing Steeler great Franco Harris.
