December 26, 1982
The Jets travelled to Minnesota for a week 8 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings in the strike shortened 1982 season. A week earlier, the Jets suffered one of the toughest losses in their history, 20-19 to the Dolphins when Uwe Von Schamann kicked a game winning 47 yard field goal as time ran out.
The 5-2 Jets had a chance to lock up a playoff spot with a win in Minnesota. One player who was looking forward to getting back on the field against Minnesota was CB Bobby Jackson. During that loss in Miami, Jackson dropped a potential game clinching interception just before Von Schamann’s game winning kick.
Jackson, and the Jets responded big time in Minnesota. The Jets would get three TDs from the offense, two from special teams and one from the defense in a 42-14 rout of the Vikings. Jackson would score twice in the game to help atone for his drop a week earlier.
On their opening drive, Richard Todd hit Johnny Lam Jones for a 51 yard pass to get the Jets deep into Viking territory. After Freeman McNeil followed the Jones reception with a 2 yard TD run, Jackson tallied his first score of the day for the Jets. After driving to the Jets five yard line, the Vikings lined up for a FG attempt. The kick was blocked by Mark Gastineau. Darrol Ray picked up the ball, but lost it at the 20 yard line, where Jackson scooped it up and went 80 yards for the score and a 14-0 Jets lead. Seconds later, the Jets would extend their lead. Lance Mehl intercepted a Tommy Kramer pass on the Vikings next play from scrimmage to set up Freeman McNeil’s 2nd TD of the game, just 36 after Jackson’s TD.
Kramer was able to get the Vikings on the board just before the half as his 1 yard run cut the deficit to 21-7. The vikings moved the ball well most of the game, outgaining the Jets by 484 to 324 yards, but Viking mistakes would be converted to Jet big plays all day.
'We had plenty of opportunities but we didn't make the big plays and they did,' Kramer said.
Jets special teams struck in the 3rd quarter, as they turned a fake field goal into a 20-yard TD pass from holder Pat Ryan to Mickey Shuler.
Early in the 4th quarter, after Minnesota cut the lead to 28-14, Jackson took matter into his own hands. He intercepted Kramer’s pass which set up a 39-yard scoring pass from Richard Todd to Bruce Harper. Jackson closed out the scoring himself late in the 4th with a 77-yard pick 6 to make it a 42-14 game.
"Last week was a nightmare for me and I felt like I owed the team something," said Jackson.
"Before the game, he told me, 'Coach, I owe you one for last week,''' said Jets Coach Walt Michaels. "Last week, he dropped an interception that could have helped us beat Miami and he felt bad about it."
