Is history repeating itself?
In 2006, the Jets were coming off of a 4-12 season, with a new coach (Eric Mangini) and a new GM (Mike Tannenbaum). Conventional wisdom suggested that the team would struggle, yet here they were, in control of their own destiny as they headed into the final weekend of the season.
The Jets were 9-6 heading into their last game of the regular season, a home game against the 2-13 Raiders. Oakland was not expected to offer much opposition to the Jets, who were 10 ½ point favorites. They came into this contest having lost 8 straight, and managing just one touchdown and 19 points in the prior 14 quarters.
The Jets took an early lead, taking advantage of a Raider mistake. WR Johnnie Morant was on the receiving end of a short pass from Aaron Brooks on the Raiders 2nd drive of the game. David Barrett knocked the ball loose and it was covered by Hank Poteat and the Jets were in business at the Raiders 44-yard line.
Chad Pennington led an 8-play 44-yard scoring drive -- the big play coming on a 20-yard end around run by Brad Smith. Pennington hit TE Chris Baker on a 1 yard TD pass to give the Jets the lead. Pennington, playing 16 games in a season for the first time in his career, finished 22 of 30 for 157 yards and the 1 TD.
The Raiders only score of the day came early in the 2nd quarter, as RB Justin Vargas carried 7 times in an 9-play drive that ended with a 35 yard Sebastian Janikowski field goal, making the score 7-3.
The Jets would put the game away when they scored on 4 consecutive possessions beginning with their final possession of the first half. Pennington went 5 for 8 during a two minute drill that got the Jets to the Raiders 17 with 8 seconds left in the half. Mike Nugent nailed the 35 yard field goal to restore the Jets lead to 7. They added another Nugent FG after a 7 ½ minute drive to open the 3rd quarter and extend the lead to 13-3. The Jets got in the end zone on their next possession thanks to a 15-yard Leon Washington run, and early in the 4th quarter, the Jets had a 20-3 lead.
The Jets would extend their lead after Eric Barton forced an Aaron Brooks fumble in the red zone as they coasted to a 23-3 victory and a wild card playoff berth.
"This is great for the team and the organization," wide receiver Laveranues Coles said. "This is just good for the guys -- all the hard work and effort that we put into this season. But again, this is a stepping stone."
"I'm hoping for a few more of them," Mangini said, after receiving a gatorade shower from his players.
Is history repeating itself? I Hope so, at least as far as the regular season goes. If we make it to the post season, maybe we can write a different ending this time around. The Jets lost in wild card playoff game 37-16 to New England the following week. It would be the only playoff appearance for the Jets during Mangini’s 3 years as head coach.
