January 3, 2010
This afternoon will make the 3rd time in Jet history that they have played a game on January 3. The last time was in 2010, which is also the only other regular season game played on this date. The Jets were in a very similar situation to where they find themselves today. In control of their own destiny. Needing a win in week 17 in order to lock up a wild card playoff spot.
A week earlier, the Jets caught a break. They travelled to Indianapolis with a 7-7 record and needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Colts were undefeated and leading the Jets 15-10 late in the 3rd quarter when head coach Jim Caldwell pulled Peyton Manning and several other Colts starters. The Jets rallied against Curtis Painter and the Colts back-ups to win 29-15 to stay in control of their own destiny.
The Jets hosted the playoff bound Bengals, needing a win to lock up a playoff spot and a date the following week, also with the Bengals, but the playoff matchup would be in Cincinnati.
It was a dominant performance by the Jets who opened up a 27-0 lead against the Bengals in the first half, while most of the Bengal starters were still in the game.
The game was a vintage Rex Ryan ground and pound performance, as the Jets ground out over 250 yards on the ground, with 4 rushing TDs. Mark Sanchez only attempted 16 passes, completing 8 for 63 yards in the 37-0 victory. Brad Smith led all rushers with 4 carries for 92 yards and 1 TD. Thomas Jones added 78 yards and 2 TDs.
On defense, the Jets held Carson Palmer to 1-11 passing for 0 yards with one interception before he was replaced by JT O’Sullivan in the 3rd quarter after the game was already out of reach. O’Sullivan was 3 for 8 for 31 yards with 2 lost fumbles. The Jets defense had 3 sacks for -31 yards, so the Bengals finished with 0 net passing yards. It was the 3rd time in Jet history that they held an opponent to 0 net passing yardage.
"This wasn't our goal to make the playoffs. Our goals are much higher," said Ryan. "We were 4-6 and we had a mission with the team. It went from impossible to improbable, back to impossible and then to inevitable."
As for the only other game the Jets played on January 3, the memories of that one are indelibly etched in the mind of most Jet fans, but for the wrong reason: Personal Foul, Roughing the Passer, #99. Defense. 1st down, Cleveland.
For what we have coming up today, I would rather remember the 2010 game.
