It could have gone down in history as the Eric Barton roughing the passer game. A bonehead play by Barton, eerily similar to the Gastineau roughing the passer penalty in the playoff game against the Browns in 1986. Both penalties prolonged late 4th quarter TD drives in gmes that went to overtime. However, in the case of Eric Barton, another player, on the other sideline emerged as the goat and Barton’s gaffe is little more than a footnote in Jets history.
Video below starts with overview of Chargers QB competition between Drew Brees and Philip Rivers, but cuts to game highlights at around the 3:40 mark:
With 24 seconds left in the 4th quarter of the their Wild Card playoff game against the Chargers in San Diego, the Jets were clinging to a 17-10 lead. The Chargers had 4th and goal at the Jets 2-yard line. The game would come down to this play. Drew Brees dropped to pass, looking for Antonio Gates in end zone. Brees was under pressure, but got a desperation throw off. It fell incomplete as Donnie Abraham had Gates covered in the end zone.
There was much rejoicing in the Lith household. The Jets had just pulled off a major upset, beating the Chargers in San Diego, 17-10. Until a flag flew. Barton’s right forearm contacting Brees’ helmet. Roughing the passer and SD had a first down at the 1 with 16 seconds remaining. The rejoicing in the Lith household had turned to string of expletives -- including several that I never would have imagined hearing from my then 13-year old son. Brees was able to find Antonio Gates for the TD on the next play, and we were headed to overtime.
The Chargers won the toss and elected to receive the OT kickoff. Both teams went three and out on their first OT possession. SD’s second possession began at their own 30. Brees, who was 31-42 for 319 yards with 2 TDS and a pick, led the Chargers right through the Jets defense to a first and 10 at the Jets 22, when Marty Schottenheimer got conservative and played for the 40-yard field goal. Barton and the Jets caught a break as Kaeding’s try with 4:19 left in OT sailed wide right.
After the miss, Chad Pennington and the Jets took over at the 30-yard line. An 18-yard pass play from Pennington to Santana Moss, after a 4-yard Curtis Martin run, got the Jets into SD territory. An 11-yard completion to Justin McCareins got them into field goal range, and a 19-yard run by Lamont Jordan made it a chip shot.
"I needed guys to dig me out of this and they did," Barton would say after the game.
Doug Brien lined up for a 28-yard game winner -- he had already missed from 33 earlier in the game. This time, he kicked it through and the Jets survived 20-17. And once again, there was much rejoicing in the Lith household.
